Not possible. No quad core processors were made to fit the CPU socket that the A-51 m15x has.

    Actually isn't it a pm965 chipset?

If its the socket thats the problem, and its a pm45 chipset, then it may be possible.

    GM965 chipset. The cpu's it would support would be (from top down): X9000, T9500, X7900, T9300, X7800, T7800, T7700, T8300, T7500, T8100, T7300,...).

Makes sense. Just checking. Anyone try a 4850 in one of these? There's an Mxm 2.1 HE version, I think. I may be mistaken.

    Correct.

Yes, there's a version of the 4850 that would fit, however it wouldn't likely work. The BIOS almost certainly wouldn't support it. In any case, even if it did work, you would firstly find it extremely hard to find one (they were only produced as a short run to bolster M17 sales) and even then, it would almost certainly overheat in the m15x.

the Quadcore cpu would physicaly fit as would the correct version of the 4850 (wooo i got 2 of the lol) but they will likely not be accepted by the bios

Is there only 1 version of the m17x that supports the ati 4850?

You never know until you try on that m15x, they may have put it in the BIOS like on laptops such as clevo m570tu and msi gx630.

No, it would not. Two different CPU sockets. The socket in the m15x fits Penryn CPUs, the only Core 2 Quad mobile processors were Montevina.

    What are you talking about?

Sockets P and M are physically the same. The mobile quad cores are Montevina only because they are all 2nd gen Penryn with 1066mhz FSB.

...but you can still use the 800mhz fsb dual core penryns on santa rosa, as well as all socket P meroms in montevina...

there are actually reports of a few gm965 laptops that will run the 1066mhz FSB processors, strangely enough. wonder which they are...

I was under the impression that the sockets would be physically different. Fair enough, so it'll fit.

But I have never heard a report of a GM965 laptop running a Monty processor.
