Im looking for a video card replacement for my laptop. It currently has a 9800 GT in it but it looks like that card might be going to crap.

Found a nice guide on upgrading. Tell me what you think:

Get another 9800m GT. I say this because the 260m might as well be the 9800 GT, gains are VERY minimal. The 280 is just too hot and not worth it as you'll just break it again and pay upwards to 500 for the card. I saw 9800m GTX go up for like $280 on Ebay just 2 days ago or a day ago. It should be noted that if you go with a 280 or 260 you lose your HDMI ability as well. Ask anyone whose done the upgrade they'll tell you themselves it's not worth it

I think it was worth the upgrade. To my knowledge I was the first one to try the GTX 280M in the Alienware Area-51 M15X last year and mine has been running fine ever since. Yeah it would be nice to use the HDMI, but I never really used it. I hope this helps. God Bless :)

From what I've read around the forums, 9800m gt is really expensive.

Why not try and get a 3870, albeit having worse performance, is a whole lot cheaper?

.... you told me in a PM that it wasn't worth it, and now you say it's worth it? Do I really need to pull out my PM history? YOu told me specifically to stay with the 9800m GT

THere are your exact words "
My opinion is that the difference between the 9800M GT and the 260 is very small, the 280 is beter but again not worth the price. I only did it just to see if I can. Yes the temperature does get hot, but it is still within the specs for the card, but most people will not want to get that hot. I would save your money and stay with the 9800M GT which is still a strong card even today. I hope this helps. God Bless "

Well part of the reason Im thinking of upgrading is because I can not find drivers that work for my card. I have been through the list of drivers on Nvidia's website (including the experimental ones) and the only ones that work are 179.48, and 186.03. Everything else either doesn't work or will produce a BSOD on start up.

If you are using windows 7 x64 and can produce a link to working drivers for a 9800 GT please do.

also, if you are sure that your video card is going bad, you can try and bake it

Thanks for these. They work but they keep me idle at around 81 - 82c. :(. Anybody know if there are laptopvideo2go drivers for 9800GT Win7x64? I looked but I got some error. Right now I have tried everything on Nvidia's website including the beta drivers and the only ones that work are:

    186.03 from Nvidia
186.03 from alienware (thank you darkloki)
    179.48 from Nvidia

If ANYBODY has ANY drivers from ANY site other then Nvidia's for the 9800 GT on Windows 7 x64, other then the one listed above PLEASE link them here.

I can get the drives from laptop2go 186 something, with the modified inf files, but my blu rays won't work if I do that.
