I am looking to replace my radeon x1400 with a GeForce 9600M GT that I found. I am new to laptops and am not sure if it will fit. Does anyone know if this will fit in my computer?

While both the 9600m and x1400 use the same socket, you'd have to see if it is supported by the laptops bios. Basically the only way to ind out is to buy a 9600m and try it out.
Someone asked the same question here: m5500i-r3 and nvidia 9600m gt or 9650m gt ... I would Like to install one fo those cards in my machine. Both cards are mxm 2 and my machince seems to have a mxm ... -
Alright, the link says something about requiring Bios Mods. How do I do that?

The BIOS modding they are talking about is basically 2 things that are not essential to the cards functionality:
1. bypassing a 30 second long warning message that happens at ever bootup
2. running the card at full performance clocks rather than the power saving ones
so basically you could get the card and try it and worry about the rest later. I know both of those can be done, the 2nd one especially easily. You use a tool called nibitor and flash the VBIOS of the card after deleting the power saving modes.
BTW I have more than a few of those 9600m/770m cards. -
