    Hey guys,

So after long talks with Alienware support about my recurring hinge problems they have decided to refund my money for my laptop on the agreement that I purchase another Alienware product from them first. This is fine (I really wish they could just use the credit from the first machine's cost though...) but I'm on the fringe now between a m14x or a m17x. What do you guys recommend for a budget around 1900? Mostly I would love for it to be able to play Battlefield 3 well

    17x no question....

IDK if the 14x will play BF3 with decent FPS...

It clearly depends of your needs... If you want to game but won't be taking your laptop everywhere, go for the M17.

If you want to game occasionally but you'll have the pc always in your backpack, I would take the M14

Sorry to hear about the hinge problems! My m15x is still going strong.

I'd say go for the m17x if you want the most power hardcore. The m14x is basically good for travel and occasional gaming.

well the m14x has been having some heat problems. Seems like the packed to much hardware into it and not enough cooling :(

I love my m17x. This base model plays most games maxed out and I can also get 4 hours of battery life if I need too :D

M17x by far, upgradability for the future and overall a better built machine. The M14x gets very hot as other users have mentioned, and I would rather have a larger screen.

    Another M17x vote.
    reasons?
-MXM GPU = upgradeable(?) in the future.
    -If you can carry a M14x you can carry a M17x R3
    -Two HDD slots
    -Better cooling
    etc. etc.

Who did you talk to or what number did you call? I'm having the same issue with my m15x (this will be the 3rd time on the hinge) and the 2nd time my webcam has stopped working. They won't do anything for me at all, they basically tell me I'm screwed when my warranty is up because I can't extend the warranty on this system and it won't be covered :(.

You mean that you're under warranty and they refuse to fix it?

They don't know if they'll have the parts but still want me to send it in. After I posted this I asked to speak to his supervisor. Same guy came back and told me they'll replace it by giving me a refund towards a new laptop. However I'm getting close to finals so waiting one week for it to get there and then 3-4 weeks if they don't have the parts is killer. What's bugging me is they can't tell me if they have the parts however last time they could confirm it.

*Edit* I'm still under warranty until next month. He said after that I can't extend it since it's now considered a "legacy system". He then told me now would be a good time to start saving for a new one that's when I asked to talk to his supervisor.

Look into the legalities of recording your conversations with Dell from here on in. Assuming it is legal things like that can be admissible in a small claims lawsuit...which is something I bet you'll have to pursue if your warranty is almost out and they are not going to repair a persistent issue with the notebook.

After sending a long email to Mr. Dell and speaking to a different supervisor I am happy to say I have an M17x R3 on the way :). I can't wait to finally have a laptop with no hinge problems :). Thank you Greg for your advice. This looks like a great community, looking forward to sticking around and getting to know people!
