Advice Needed

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700 purchased in 2005.

It still runs but the graphics are distorted, battery is dead and will not take a charge.It has has seen better days.
I am not an avid gamer but would like some advice on what I would be happy with after having the m7700 for so many years.

I do like the 17" screen.The new Alienware I see in catalogs mailed to me from Dell show some nice looking laptops both in the Alienware and Dell name.
These laptops that sell for $800 such as the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 from the photos look really nice in black with red accents.

The Alienware laptops shown in the catalog has a 17" Alienware17 for $1169.99 after 10% off. 7th generation Intel core i7 processor Windows 10 home 8gm memory and 1tb hard drive.Can a SSD be installed in this unit? Would either of these laptops be a good purchase?

This old m7700 has been sitting at a desk and never moved except to vacuum dust out and apply heat sink paste on the graphics card. She can run hot but I have the "Get Thermal" program that allows me to adjust fan speeds.

Would I be better off with an Alienware tower and monitor since the computer will remain on a desk and not moved to other rooms or carried?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated or if you could direct me to a forum where I should post these questions.

Your Alienware m7700 was actually just a Clevo D900T re-branded as an Alienware in the US. Modern Alienware's are build by Dell and have nothing in common with the old other than the name.

Clevo and Sager seem to be the same company now (not sure if they were always) and Sager still sells laptops that in my opinion are much nicer than "Dellalienware's" current offerings. Sagers seem to be much more upgradable too like the legacy Alienware units used to be, opting for things like replaceable / upgradable video cards. A lot of modern day Alienware's have them built into the motherboard so this isn't an option.

Do you still game or just want something high performance? You can get a laptop with a high end CPU without paying the premium for a high end GPU as well if you don't game anymore.

If it never moved I would consider building a desktop. It will be MUCH cheaper to get a high end gaming desktop than a high end gaming laptop. At the very least I wouldn't recommend paying the premium to have Alienware build one for you unless you don't know how to do it yourself. Still there are probably companies out there that will do it cheaper.
