So.... with the new 980ms being released and claiming to have the power of 680m sli... who is planning on buying and upgrading an m18x r2? Think it will be compatible and not slow down a setup with supposedly the gpu power of 4 680ms?

On paper every new version GPU claims 50% increase in speed over the equivalent last generation. Real world performance usually tells a different story.

I would or to see. Real world upgrade worthwhile in tr mobile GPUS this go'round.

As long as it's compatible with my R2 I'll probably upgrade in a few months. So if someone is after a couple of cheap 780'm around that time let me know.
If the R2 for some reason is incompatible ill probably reluctantly build a X99 beast.

I'm eagerly awaiting to upgrade my M18X-r2 for a SLI of 980M's mostly because it seems the power consumption its the same as old top cards(100W), so there's room even for a overclock. Would be a beast of upgrade.

I'm pretty sure the 980M and 970M should work with the M18xR1/R2. If anything maybe a vbios would be required. As for me upgrading from 680M sli, probably not. I'll most likely wait 1080M or if there's a refresh, the 980MX/985M.

I didn't see they were sli I only saw single gpu machines. Must have missed it. I wish Alienware would revamp their lineup with the launch of the 980ms and make it more like the R2. More Features Instead Of less.

Anyone have an idea when alien ware will announce something? Trying to decide if im upgrading the trusty m18x r2 or buying a new computer. I wouldn't want buy the 18 the way it currently is, a watered down feature cut shadow of it's predecessor.

Ha. Agreed. It still seems like the m18x r2 is the best on the market. The new 18s kinda suck. But if they were to resign then I might by the 980m with it

I was under the impression that they were skipping 22nm/20nm and going straight to 14nm with Pascal. We've speculated a lot about this, and a lot of us decided that they'll probably be releasing another 28nm card with more cores next year. Sort of like how the 780M has more cores than the 680M, but they're both Kepler.

    Upgrade the M18x R2.

Nah, I don't. The 3940XM (when overclocked) can outperform the 4930MX. It should be able to handle them fine.

This will likely be the last generation you can upgrade to. 980M SLI will almost double your graphics performance. It's worth it... Go for it.

    I thought the same thing!

The CPU is amazing man, I can't believe how fast and low temp is with this one compared to my QX9300. I have only heard my CPU fan once and it was when I was running the bios test.

I even run a benchmark and it was 100% load all cores for 20 minutes and the fan didn't turn to high, temp peak was at 70 when my QX9300 peaks at almost 85 for around 10 minutes

I say they use 1080 but instead of "m" for mobile, they rename them to "p" for portable. Seriously, how could they ever pass up a marketing gimmick like that, the GTX 1080p!

Or better yet, GTX 1080p (portable edition) for mobile, and GTX 1080P (Performance Edition) for desktops. That would be like the biggest troll ever and so full of win.

The core 2 series had a wide variation. You had chips that could barely overclock and chips that could overclock 30-40% on stock voltage.

The module size has decreased with Pascal, and that means it will probably have a smaller connection type than what MXM offers now.

Oh, they made it bigger...? I just remember hearing the size changed and that meant a new connection type.

Sorry, no online source to reference. Just heard it through word of mouth. I'm sure rumors will be hitting the net early next year, though.

That's unfortunate and I hope it turns out to be a fabrication. Just because the chip gets smaller doesn't mean making the rest of the GPU smaller is a good idea. In fact, to me that's a really terrible idea. They should keep it the same and use the extra space on the PCB to make the GPU more awesome. If it turns out to be true, then it's just another example of what happens when idiots are allowed to make decisions that affect the masses. That's the trouble with this moronic "efficiency" nonsense. They are not really interested in doing anything truly amazing. If they were, then they would exploit every resource at their disposal to increase performance instead of going smaller simply because they can get away with it.

Honestly I doubt they're going away from MXM. Getting rid of MXM on laptops would be like getting rid of PCI-Express on desktops. I just don't see it happening on their high end cards. I do see more and more soldered models though.

Hey guys, a bit out of touch with AW atm.

When will the 980M's actually be available for purchase in an AW system?

Also, the new Alienware 18, is this the next "incarnation" of the M18x? I.e, no more revisions of the M18x?

I am personally very impatient for this release because one of my current 780Ms has a thermal problem and I'm hoping to squash this problem and get 980Ms in my machine, thereby killing two birds with one stone, so a techy doesn't have to come out twice (I believe there is a service fee for getting them to come out here in the UK, I'm not sure). I have warranty but it expires in a bit over a month so I'm titchy about this upgrade...

Yeah that's why I have my desktop. I don't plan on going 4k anytime soon till it matures for a few more generations.... By then the 1080 or 1180 will be out... 2560 is the sweet spot for gaming IMO. The OS's from M$ needs to catch up on resolution right now anyway...
