I use one of these. Works in my lap, laying down in bed, and fits in my suitcase for travel. They have a slightly larger one and that's what I have. I got it from Bed, Bath and Beyond a few years ago.

It is large enough for my U3 and my G700 mouse if I set it off to the left side instead of centered.

Ooh... I may be interested in one of these. Could you link us to the one you have, Mr. Fox? I don't see the "slightly larger" one.

No legs? Mine is about the same but has adjustable legs. It is so perfect and comfy for gaming in bed. I just use blankets as arm rests and I'm set for hours.

Amazon.com : My Ultimate Pro Multifunctional Laptop Table : Laptop Computer Stands : Computers & Accessories

I paid $20 at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has a light and built in fan but the fan is loud and crappy so I never use it. And that raised part is adjustable but I've never raised it. I use it with this cooler...

Amazon.com : Zalman Minimized Noise Cooler for Notebook (NC2000B) : Laptop & Netbook Computer Cooling Pads : Electronics

There's a newer cooler but it's all plastic and most say the older model works better because it's all metal and the metal stays very cool to the touch and helps chill the air.

I tried the lapdesk and it's not bad. However, lately I have switched to a wood laptop Desk with Build-in Cooling Fan &Mouse Pad that I can use both on the couch and even in bed--yay, lazy me. Here's a pic and the amazon link to it for more info. It's an OEM kind of product, no direct link to the manufacturer.

I have one like this and don't use it any more. I didn't like the legs and found it was uncomfortable sitting directly on my lap with the legs folded up. It was not usable when sitting in my living room easy chair. The legs would not fit between the arm rests. I use it for a printer stand in my office now.

That's an interesting design. I haven't seen that one before.

The link provided is for the slightly larger one. I have not seen the larger one available at BB&B any more. They only had the smaller one the last time I checked and I can't find either one on their web site.

Ah, I see. I've been looking around but haven't been able to find the one you posted anywhere else. $47 with shipping from their site.. a bit expensive. I may still bite, though. I could really use one of these.. mobile benchmarking and gaming stations. :p

Trying to figure out how to game in bed without having my arms hurt after 40 min being hung up in the air/ when gaming in bed or using the 18 alienware in bed u need to give like a 40 degree angel to make the thickness of the machine be easy to type on and hope the machine doesnt slide down, if u know what i mean...
Also depends if u sit on the bed at 90 degrees with a stright back or lay down a tad...
With the macbook pro i did not have such issues because its a lot smaller and weight a lot less...
This is why im looking for a good lapdesk to help me solve these problems..

that thing is huge ! lol . as much as it looks nice and comfortable, i doubt would be easier for me to drag it to the side when im done with it :)
see, i have a very big bed hehe...
I remember back when i used to game with my m18x r1 in bed , my elbows started to hurt badly because of the position u lay + the thickness of the m18x + the angel it makes ur wrists be...
so was hoping for a lapdesk that can hold the m18x in a small angel and not slide down to ur chest / press on ur lower tummy :)

Bumbo - does your M18 fit on that? I have an IKEA down the street from me so I think I may head over there next week and pick one up for myself. Also can your laptop breath on it? I have no idea where the air intakes are on the M18. Guess I should just wait till I get mine on Monday.

Ikea one looks awesome but the site says it's only 16.5" wide, seems a bit small for a 17 or 18, prolly have it hang it off the side a bit, no?

Did some research, this appears to be one of the best options: A Lap Desk with Personality by LapDeskLady on Etsy

I have a 22.5" wide lap desk now and it's just a tad bit too small for my M17 and a mouse, this seller offers 30" wide desks, which seems perfect.

I have the same one as brother Fox. Works great on my lap sitting on the couch or in bed. The 18 just fits for me, i have to put my Tactx mouse to the side. The one recommended by Saint Satan looks good as well...may have to give it a try.

I'm also highly interested in a remedy for this. I usually have to sit it down toward the end of the bed far away while using a wireless kb/mouse in order to not roast my jimmies. I wish I had a super tall hospital bed tray on wheels I could use.

When I use my M18X-R2 in bed, on the couch or at poolside, I use a large enough, wooden "breakfast in bed" tray with legs (the legs are really handy compared to solutions without, as one doesn't get all the heat onto one's legs and lap) that I bought at some store for cheap many years ago and have a CoolerMaster NotePal U3 Laptop Cooler on it for a more comfortable typing angle. I use a SpeedPad mouse pad (which is made of hard plastic and evens out any bumps from the bed, blanket, towel, couch, etc.) next to me to complement the tray.

My problem is most of them aren't tall enough. We have a pretty tall bed (I actually have to somewhat jump just to get in it) and the tallest I've seen is only 47 inches. Not gonna work that well.

Wow, that's a really tall bed. You could get the tallest one available and have a welding shop or auto body shop mod it a little bit to make it the right height if you don't own the tools to do it. That should not cost a great deal of money... a piece of steel or aluminum box tubing of the correct dimensions an maybe an hour of labor to weld and grind down the seam. You could rattle-can spray paint it so it looked nice after that is done.

I don't use my beast in bed very often. When I do, I use this setup... same as what I use in my family room recliner (my gaming chair, LOL). My rigid mouse pad fits on the broad arm of my recliner and is in the perfect position for kicked-back gaming. In bed, the hard mouse pad can sit at my side. When just web surfing, the lap desk has enough space for the mouse with the laptop off to the side and it is still very comfortable to use. (I use maxed out mouse speed and very high DPI so I don't need to mouse my mouse more than an inch or two in any direction. If you like a slow moving cursor, it might not be enough surface, but it works perfect with the settings cranked way up.)

The problem with having a wooden lap desk or any other lap desk , is that the wieght of the laptop is still on your legs.. not to mention the weight of the lap desk itself... and when it comes to the hospital tables, it seems very tempting however they lack a nice angle for typing / gaming etc... i can see my self laying down with the hands up in the air like a robot... =/ if you could only bend the hospotal beds in a certain angle towards you and keep the machine from sliding down, that would be awesome...

( p.s forgive my spelling / grammer as english is not my main language )

They have a tilt-top model. See the link above. That should work nice.

The idea of using the system sitting in bed for an extended period seems foreign to me because I sleep very little (3 to 6 hours average) and rarely get in bed unless I am sick, abnormally tired or ready for night-night.

The weight of the M18xR1/R2/18 sitting in my lap on a lap desk hasn't really ever bothered me a bit, even on the all-nighter gaming binges with my bottom planted in my recliner. But, I know some people have a different tolerance level for that kind of thing. I am a self-abusive monster where ergonomics are concerned.

Sooo I have been looking for a lapdesk for my laptop. I like watching Supernatural, but having the laptop on my lap gets annoying. I have been looking into some tables. Do any of you know of good ones that actually fit the laptop and a mouse?

Here's what I found: Amazon.com - Kings Brand Foldable Adjustable Laptop Stand For Table, Sofa & Bed - Home Office Desks

Amazon.com: Space Saver Solid Wood Laptop Bed Tray Multiuse Laptop Table Desk W/built-in Mouse Pad Supports up to 18.4" Screen - New Improved Model: Computers & Accessories

    What do you all think?

I have one like that and I am not very pleased with it. While the top surface is large enough and it might be OK for a really light laptop, it's too top-heavy and unstable with a large machine like the M18x sitting on top of it. (At least one of the reviews on Amazon mentions this problem.) This is true even with the legs on a hard surface. When attempting to set it down in a bed or a sofa cushion it was essentially unusable unless I was holding onto it to keep it steady, and that made using it miserable and nerve-racking. I could just see it falling over and my beast getting smashed, so that was an instant disappointment. I tried using it with the legs folded up and because it had no cushion on the bottom it was too uncomfortable to try to use it sitting in my lap. I used it about a week with the legs folded up, then put it in the closet and dismissed it as a bad purchase decision for a large laptop.

Oh, OK... now I understand. The new systems are nice looking in their own way, but they lack that menacing classic Alienware look that many of us love so much about the previous generations. It's a real shame that we lost that. Alienware picked up a few customers by muting the appearance, but they probably disappointed just as many in the process. I like both quite a lot, but I prefer the more aggressive look.

Yeah, I loved the look of the old system and that's why I decided to get this instead of the new one which would probably only have 770M in my budget.. At least 7970M has the horsepower to keep up with a 780 with a slight OC ;)

I kinda like the new design more. Both are pretty great imo.

Those all look good and well, but does anyone know what I can buy so that my girlfriend won't about me being on my laptop gaming? lol Cause if you find it, ill buy it. Bringing it into bed with us? Not gonna happen. haha.. And don't say buy a wedding ring. I get married, I probably will never see my laptop again! lol
