Already interrogated him, he has no idea what he is talking about. It will not work in the M18x.

I messaged him when he first listed the 1060 on ebay, and asked him if it worked in the M18x. He said "compatible", I asked him if he actually tested it in the M18x, and never got a reply back. Guy has absolutely no clue. My educated guess is it doesn't work and I'm not about to gamble with 600$

Prema already installed a GTX 1060 card on a Clevo P150EM which uses a LVDS screen connector like M17x or m18x notebooks
    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10795610

If someone can lend a M18X-R2 to Prema maybe he could test if the card is compatible?

    Edit:
This seller listed the M18X-R2 as compatible and accept return if it doesn't work. Maybe is worth a shot?

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-1060M-6GB-DDR5-MXM-3-0-Type-B-Ship-From-US/282282696099?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid=888007&algo=DISC.MBE&ao=1&asc=38530&meid=319ba26a887c44a88803c61b91f6d7ba&pid=100009&rk=1&rkt=2&sd=252670994431&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true

Hum... it seems the GTX 1060 isn't more powerful than a 980M card and don't have a SLI connector so why bother with this GPU? Now a GTX 1070 card would be worth a shot if found a MXM 3.0 compatible one.

You can try but I don't see the point as 1060 is as powerful as 980M

Even if it works, yeah, it is not worth the money. Plus, sadly 1060s aren't SLI capable, so u waste the 2nd slot, unless u want a Physx card which is kind of not typical for Multi GPU setups.

He got it working because he has intel HD 4000 enabled using optimus, which is able to internally convert eDP signal to LVDS and allow the system to POST. He also had to BIOS mod the P150EM to get it to POST. It was definitely far from plug and play like the 980M is.

wait , gtx 1060 not as powerful as a gtx 980m (single card) i think gtx 1060 is vr capable and is slighty slower than the desktop model . maybe a gtx 970 desktop equivalent?

Every card is VR capable as long as you have DX12 and output ports. 980M/880M/780M/680M they are all VR capable.

Because nvidia wants you to go out and buy a GTX 1060 or better.

Anyone knows what happened with TechInferno's aftermarket NVidia modded INF page? It's about a week the page is down or not found... hope it come back soon.

I think GTX 1060 is actually faster than 980M:

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9563110

So far it's been recognized as being as fast as GTX 980, which is at least 10% faster than 980M.

The bench above is around 14.5k GPU Firestrike with the 1060 at around 2100MHz. TDP is comparable to 980M so pre-existing heat-sink design should just barely handle it.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1060/24.html

Apparently someone already got it working in a Clevo with an LDS display, I don't think it's a leap to assume it could work in the M18X R2.

Tell Prema if he wants a test system I can send him mine, although we're not exactly on the best of terms.

I'm currently using my desktop, haven't been homeless for a few months now (in a veterans shelter).

I've said it before (in this thread even), and I'll say it again. Prema had to to some trickery with the BIOS to POST, and the internal clevo wiring on the mobo and how it handles video signal allowed for eDP-LVDS internal signal conversion. Probably impossible with Alienware. I will not just work on any LVDS machine.

Well I think we need to put this issue to rest by sending him an M18x R2 to see if it is possible.
