Usually, when I go to bed and turn off my lappy, I always power off the main power of the power extension I have my laptop's adapter connected to so that it won't be trying to charge my battery constantly and damage it. So far I have my battery at 100% (0 wear level) since I have had it on Desktop Battery Mode to not overcharge it......

my question is, is what I'm doing with regards to cutting off the power completely right or is it unnecessary? like what happens if I don't turn off the power from the mains completely? will it still be trying to charge the battery and damage it or is the laptop smart enough to not do this?

When I read the thread title, I was expecting to find a bedtime story or a prayer recital... " Now I lay me down to sleep..."

I think it's fine. It cannot keep trying to charge the battery if there is no power to the AC adapter.

If it is fully charged when you turn it on the next day and not discharging due to the connected AC adapter, there is nothing to worry about. If having connected creates a drain, you are canceling out your efforts to have the battery last longer by inducing charge cycles.

The only potential downside to leaving it plugged when there is absolutely no reason for it to be is the remote possibility of damage due to a huge power surge, or lightning strike, in the middle of the night or something like that. That could happen during the day while you are using it, but if it is turned off it is best to disconnect any power source as well as network cables (which can also fry your system in the event of a lightning strike).

About 10 years ago I had damage to 6 computers on my home network due to a direct lightning strike on my house. All but one system was turned off. Among the damage was motherboard, network adapters, video cards, keyboards and mice. The one in use had the least serious damage, but my daughter got quite the buzz from it, LOL... Came through the mouse and zapped her good. I lost a few appliances, including a microwave oven and TV in that same lightning strike.

I still leave everything plugged in all the time. Life is all about risks. That's why you have insurance, right?

Well there is no insurance on computer items in Dubai, only on home, cars and that's it. With that being said and from what you said, I think I shall continue to switch off my main electrical extender thingie where all the computer stuff is connected to as I was before....

    Thank you so much
