What’s the best thermal paste?

Hi all, just want to get the community’s opinion on what thermal paste you guys use and why. I normally use IC Dimond 7 and haven’t had any problems apart from it not being as effective as it should around 6 months after application. I have Arctic Silver 5 and some Cool Labs Liquid Ultra laying around. I’m comfortable using normal thermal pastes but am not 100% sure with liquid metal as I’ve never used it before. Also been checking kryonaut and GC Gelid extreme and both have very good reviews.

Open to all suggestions and your experience with what you guys have used and what you think is a good thermal paste in your opinion.

Forgot to mention I will be using the paste on my CPU.

For CPU I would recommend Cool Labs Liquid Ultra, or kryonaut they are both liquid metals (gallium). Those two will give you the best temps, however you will need to re paste every 6 months to a year depending on how much you over clock your CPU. I believe it was said that kryonaut is better than CLLU but I have only used CLLU.

 

Ok thanks. Have you ever suffered with leakage? I know people normally use 3m electrical tape incase of a leak. I move my laptop around and sometimes take it with me on my travels so do not want to turn my laptop on one day and find it shorted out because of a leak. Do you paint it on to the die

If you're traveling I don't recommend LM unless you use foam dams.

I do travel with the CLLU applied, I do not have any dams nor do I use the electrical tape. I have done more than 6 re-pastes with the CLLU. In the case of CLLU, less is better. Put as little as possible, both on the CPU die and heat sink. I would say use what you are comfortable with. I have warranty till October 2019 (hopefully never have to use it) so I don't really worry. I will be moving on to desktop after the warranty is gone.

 

I think I’ll use the kryonaut as the temperature drops are good and I won’t be paranoid 24/7 lol.

Coollaboratory have changed the Liquid Ultra composition and not the first choice anymore (see... Conductonaut). FYI Silicon Lottery even changed to Grizzly Conductonaut for over a year ago. And many of us who prefer LM changed long time ago.

My apologies, I was referring to Conductonaut Liquid Metal Thermal Paste as it is gallium. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut is not conductive.

As for drying out, not sure how to fix this issue with the heat sink. It does dry out for me, is this an indicator that I need a new heat sink?

 

More likely you need to lap the heatsink and make it is flat and LM drying out is really bad.

 

Yeah more or less. Its similar to kryonaut thermal performance. I'm using the same paste and its been 2 years plus and the paste is performing like day one.
