So I have a BRAND NEW Unopened Alienware 18 for sale in the UK only, the spec is maxed out with the 4940mx, and 2x 880m, along with 4 years warranty and 4 years accidental damage. I'm selling it for £2945. (£3800 from dell right now + month wait).

Where else can I advertise this sale? Does anybody have experience with selling Alienware products in the UK?

I've posted it on Ebay, in the for sale section of this forum and on Gumtree. The UK version of Craigslist sucks.

I can't return it to dell. I'd like to find somebody who would be up for saving a lot of money if they were looking at an AW18 fully kitted out, or somebody who wants to stretch from buying an Alienware 17, or just somebody looking to get a good deal on an upgrade.

It's harder to attract the right audience since the UK market is much smaller than the American/Canadian one.

ANY ideas would be much appreciated.

    SOLD - £2900 on Ebay

I'm selling it for the equivalent of 5560usd and it costs 6400 from Dell directly. We have to pay a little more for alienware products over in England.

I've already tried the buy and sell thread but it seems like it's only full of American buyers/sellers, even when looking through previous pages.

Would you be interested in trading it for my system and I pay you the difference?

My system is only 3 months old, has 1 year warranty (next business day on site visit) and I've upgraded the RAM to the max along with 3 new SSDs as you can see from my sig. Don't know if you would be interested but I thought I'd ask

    I live in Dubai

I'm not selling this laptop outside the UK.
Also I'm not interested in swapping or part exchanging for anything else.
Thank you for the reply though!

Inconvenience aside, if you sell internationally your market increases dramatically. Fully loaded systems like that are extemely hard to sell unless you reduce the price alot. Not to say your price is wrong but generally people parting with that much money will want to get it directly from the source which is understandable. You pretty much need to make it well worth any risk/inconvenience to the buyer.

Can I ask what exactly happened that made you unable to return this to Dell? You said it's brand new unopened so I'm assuming you were away for 30 days or more after receiving delivery of this AW18.

This was ordered, I was away and missed a return period.

It's for sale on eBay, and I've offered free next day ups express postage, before 10:30am...
With eBay/PayPal you're protected and the buyer would get it 3/4 weeks early and save quite a lot of money.

I lowered the price by £100 to £3199, which is getting closer to some of the offers I've had. I will consider all offers over £3000. The price is already low. It's just difficult targeting the right market.

Hi Omen you have to remember when you bought the product you had to pay VAT.
Now your reselling it there is no VAT so the price should be less VAT.

£3800 less VAT at 20% means its worth is £3040.

Omen, may I ask why are you selling it? Other than being outside the 30 day period etc

Hi, I simply don't want the laptop anymore. Won't use it as much as I thought I would. Like I said I got the 4 years warranty and Accidental Damage so I will transfer this into your name if you are going to purchase this laptop.
Please check your pm, sent you some information.

So are there any other places where I can advertise? I've used Ebay, Gumtree, and notebookreview buy/sell.

These are the only places I could find.

VAT makes up the price of the product. That's why they're so costly in the first place. VAT is 20% right now.
There is no way to buy it without. I'm sorry but you can't just take it off the product.

Example 1) Buy a brand new car, £20,000, and you pay the vat on it (£4000). Sell the car 1 year down the line, the blue book value is £16000, would you then take off a further £4000 and sell it for £12000 because you paid £4000 in VAT?

Example 2) Buy a phone, which costs £500 sim free. Dislike it and decide to sell it the following month, it's worth £400. Would I then sell it for £300 because £100/500 was VAT in the first place?

This laptop is brand new, unopened and I already paid the VAT. You can't escape VAT, that's the full cost of the laptop and what's it worth. It's the latest model out, with the latest specs. So depreciation isn't an issue here either, or wear and tear.

So therefore I conclude my laptop most certainly isn't worth just £3040. Dell are asking £3800, My buy it now price is £3199 and It's still brand new + unopened, and you get it next business day instead of waiting 4 weeks.

Sorry if this came across in a bad way, but there was no better way to explain it without basic examples.

But don't you (the buyer) get some of that VAT back? now when you resell it to someone, he won't get anything back since the VAT is under you, please correct me if I'm wrong. So it doesn't make any sense someone buyin a used product even if not opened to pay the VAT value since he won't be able to claim any of it back.

Sorry I didn't mean to "spam". I guess I just settled for a little more convenience by pressing reply with quote

This is correct, but the buyer has to have his own business to benefit from this, and it obviously needs to fit in their allowance. Also I would have thought* it depends on the type of business, unless it's one which requires the use of powerful PCs then I doubt it would be a safe bet. Since this only affects a very small amount of people, It shouldn't reduce the value of the laptop overall.

    Hope this clears it up.

That's fine. It's just that if one was in a business where buying this would be a viable option, even if they miss out on the VAT claim from this sale, there are several other things which the business can claim back VAT on. There's always a limit, and very few businesses wouldn't use it up since it saves them money. As I stated, you have to be careful with luxury goods like this one, as this level of performance is typically not needed since it should only be solely used for the business purposes, but if they do use this level of computing power then it's perfectly fine to write it off.

Things you can write off are anything used for the Business. For example PC's, Cars, Phones, Office Equipment, Stationary, Internet. But there are lots of rules and restrictions. Lets say I have my own business and I want to buy an alienware laptop for business and personal use. 50% of the time I'll use it for work, and 50% I will use it for personal/charitable use. I can only claim 50% of that VAT. The same applies for cars. It all gets very complicated.

And if you're wondering, I don't own my own business. I know how it works though. It's quite easy for me to go deeper into it, but I don't want to bore you. They have to explain it very well for everybody to understand, so a simple google search would bring up plenty of information regarding this.

Good luck selling it on ebay, I recently bought one off ebay to be honest and it was a great deal (AW 17).

High spec model so very limited market. Just wait it out and hopefully you will have a buyer. I think another NBR member sells alienwares J.Dre, but he/she is in the US.

If you are going to put this up on eBay, be very clear about your terms and conditions of the sale. There are way too many scumbags looking to pull a fast one on eBay either by claiming they never received the item or it somehow got damaged or whatever, and the risk goes up especially for a maxed out system like this.

If It does get sold to somebody on ebay, It will be fully tracked via ups and signed for. There will be proof they received it from UPS, I'll pay for express delivery too. UPS also insure the item too, this alone costs £150 but it's worth it to make sure it gets to the buyer in the original condition, which is perfect and unopened. Will obviously take pictures before it's shipped out too from all angles.

I've had offers close to what I'm asking. I thought it would be gone within a couple of days considering the savings, it was actually picked up by a fraudulent buyer which delayed the ebay process further. I set restrictions and it should be fine now.

Just waiting a for a fair offer. One buyer is offering a very close price but needs to sort out finances etc. Thank you for the replies!

You need to be aware that in many European countries, Dell's return period is much lower. Only 7 days in some of them, but I'm not sure how long it is in England.

In England it's only 7 days. In my opinion it should be at least 14 days, but 21 days preferably.
