In another post I shot a video that proved that the single mode can be used.
    Original post address: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/m18xr2-hdmi-output-cant-up-to-2k.825799/page-4#post-10820375
Now I have purchased a 4K monitor and have done the following tests:
    SG mode:
    DP port: 1080P_144Hz, 2K_30Hz, 4K_30Hz
HDMI: 1080P_60Hz, does not support 2K4K
    PEG mode:
    DP: 1080P_144Hz, 2K_120Hz, 4K_60Hz
    HDMI: 1080P_144Hz, 2K_30Hz, 4K_30Hz
The discovery of booting in PEG mode:
    1. Connect the DP port of the 4K monitor to the notebook. It cannot be turned on in PEG mode, and it will alarm 8 times.
    2. Connect the HDMI port of the 4K monitor to the notebook, and it can be turned on in PEG mode, but the BIOS screen will not appear, and the screen will be black until the system welcome page is entered.
    3. Connect the DP port and HDMI port of the 4K monitor to the notebook. It can't be turned on in PEG mode, and it will alarm 8 times.
4, I bought an HDMI spoof through Taobao, it can make the notebook think that there is a monitor connected via HDMI, so that it can boot normally.
5, the video in the old post shows that the 1600*900 monitor is connected to the notebook, the BIOS screen can be seen normally in PEG mode, and the system is successfully entered.
My guess: the BIOS of the M18R3 does not support high resolution display mode.
At present, my usage: HDMI port is connected to HDMI spoofing device, DP port is connected to 4K monitor, and the screen is set to display only in one monitor after entering the desktop. I set up the notebook and used it as a desktop computer. I usually rely on sleep wake-up instead of switching on and off.

Yes, the internal monitor is still connected, but it doesn't show anything right now. Also, if I remove it, the external monitor will still work, as it is now.

I am not suprised by this in the slightest, it acts exacly as it should. Only alienware has the 8beeps thing, any other notebook would be able to do the same without the HDMI spooing adapter

Interesting, I believe the M18xR2 does the 8 beeps with internal display connected even though it has an HDMI source connected.

Its operating under PEG mode? Fairly interesting way of keeping a DTR running optimally. Its not ideal but its the best anyone is going to get with this laptop.

I wonder if 1070 SLI would work?

Should work as long s both cards have an SLI connector and you get a high bandwidth bridge from something like a Clevo

My Ranger can boot to my ZR30W (mini DP, 1600p) in PEG, same with my M6700. Haven't tested the M18X, but will soon enough

I found another way to even make the gtx 1070 work with internal laptop monitor

we will need to use the hdmi in for that

all we need is mini display port to hdmi adaptor

we first use the hdmi spoofer so that the laptop can post then we remove the spoofer and connect the mini display port to hdmi adaptor from the mini display port to the hdmi port of the laptop

I think this will work only with alienware 18 not m18 r1 or r2 because they can't post with hdmi spoofer

This post, just like other posts, trying to get a new generation (not anymore) to work with the laptop that was advertised as an enthusiast machine with complete upgrade possibilities is just pathetic. When I bought my 18 in 2013, I thought I had made a sound investment. But I found out 2 years latter that I was **** out of luck on trying to keep this a viable gaming machine. SMH, just upsetting. Shame this will be the last year for my 18.

It was never advertised as being "upgradable", that has never been a marketing standpoint from AW or Dell. I'd be happy that you got a few good years out of your 18, and even a 1070 in it will be good for another few years.

Not only that but AW acually even sold the 980M SLI set-up for the 18 when all of us complained to them about 18 being EOL.

Even 10 series (1060/1070) work fine in the 18 in SG mode so I don’t get what you’re complaining about?

18 worked with 780M SLI, 880M SLI, 980M SLI, 1060/1070. If we can source a MXM 3.0b RTX 2060 in the future I wouldn’t doubt it work with that as well.

    M18xR2 also worked with 680M SLI, 780M SLI, 880M SLI, 980M SLI, 1060/1070.

Like mentioned above, they were never advertised as upgrabable. We just took advantage of the MXM 3.0b form factor.

I would love to get 2 x 980M and swap the cores to 980 DT but that’s too much work for me. ‘

I’ve decided to stay with 680M SLI and just move on to a newer laptop in the future. 980M SLI still kinda pricey despite the $300 cost per card new on ebay. 1070 is $540 lol.

    I remember them, they're the 130W 980s:

    https://www.techinferno.com/index.p...-gm204-gtx-980-m5500-n16e-gxxq7-all-variants/

If it fit , I think they would work well in M18xR2 due to its power and cooling capability.

Yeah I think @Rengsey R. H. Jr. tried in the M18xR2 and it wouldn't fit even with a heatsink mod but don't remember.

He's like 20 mins away from me so if he orders them we can try them out in my M18xR2 but if the 1070 didn't work out for him I don't think these will.

I just don't remember, he's had so many cards to test LOL

I was just saying from what I remember, in that someone (forgot name) fit and ran the 1070 MSI in the AW 18/M18X R3 perfectly fin, he just had to cutout a little bit of the finstack to fit the tabs, which is only needed on the left GPU

It was me. I did it on the M18X R2. And as you said , the notch into the heatsink will make it fit perfectly.

If we can get these 980s it will be a nice upgrade for the M18X R2 running PEG.

This is the score of the 980s SLI but with a 6700K I did awhile back.

    Score: 20902

You were able to make that card fit both master and slave slot as long as we dremel the heatsink a bit? (M18xR2 of course)

How much does the taobao agent with shipping add to the cost? Maybe they'd do a bit less if buying 2+ cards?

Something like bhiner or superbuy adds like $5 or so iirc, and then shipping for such a small item would be like $20 for expedited.
Recalling back from the 1070 in the 18, the finstack needed modding, a cutout for the tab, and if using the NV heatsink, the VRM plate needed grinding

    I only had a GTX 1070 in the m18x R2, same design as GTX 980 ...

Yes you only have to dremel the master heatsink as for the secondary , the tab face the other direction of the heatsink.

I don’t know who to contact to get pricing lol.

Pricing is 2299 Yuan, which is around $340-350 with current conversion rates.
I would use a buying agent, you just make a account, paste the link, and go from there essentially.

These cards are meant to be used in SLI (MSI GT80), and they need mods for the heatsink as it has the notch

So there’s nothing in the way of the tab on the secondary port?

These don’t get in the way?

What system would you use this for? Didn’t you sell your M18x again? lol

The one on the left is incorrect, the red area is the heatsink and not the motherboard

I’m saying on the left side wouldn’t the card hit the two headers and the chipset heatsink? The card seems a bit wider on the sides of the mxm connector.

For the right side it looks like the subwoofer would get in the way.

Edit: looks like one side of the 980 is fine and only the tab is the issue.
