Is anyone else surprised at the high prices of cards such as the GTX 980m and GTX 1060m?

    I can buy a 1080 cheaper 2nd hand than I can a 980m.

It seems like the price is kept artificially high due to the limited upgrade potential of laptops.

It’s frustrating I can almost build a new rig (tower) for the price of 2 980ms.

I'm not sure if they even make those older cards at all anymore, so they could be priced higher due to limited availability.

Basic supply and demand (note no mention of the actual ability of the item being sold)

You sometimes find 2nd hand ones on eBay for under £300 but how far can you trust something that’s 3 years old and you’ve no history of its past. I want to upgrade my cards once my laptops back from being fixed.

I may just go with a 1060. I wish I didn’t have to spend so much for things that are so old

    Thanks,

It seems I made a mistake getting an 18 backing 2013.

1060 in the AW18 is a great investment, after a few little work arounds, working great, for cheaper than a 980m, for similar performance :)

Same with the 17, think it started somewhen in 2014 with the BGA models.

    Also think you're better up with a non-BGA ;)

You must have a really good deal on a 1080 then
I find 980m's for like $350 off ebay

~$500+ for eDP only and SLI? No thanks.
Although it does have more performance, I can snag a 980m for under $400

In the uk if I convert £ to $ then the average price of a 2nd hand 980 is $485.

Uuuh that's a lot...over here in Germany you can find em 2nd hand for around 280-350 €, not freqently but you find em every now & then (that's about 250-315 £), I smtimes check out the prices just for fun :vbcool:.

when i was doing my 1060 mod, i couldnt find any for less than 800, crazy that ebay is flooded with em all of a sudden. had found one from china used for 600 back then, (all cad) but didnt wanna take the risk. and SLI doesnt even work in all games, and its not eDP only, the SG mode makes it so it works on lvds

That's a shame, here in the US it's much better for almost everything

And yes, it's eDP only as it requires a iGPU to convert to LVDS which isn't always possible (locked bios, no iGPU, iGPU disabled) and doesn't even have SLI

True, but I unlocked my bios easily, and what aw18's dont have igpu's?

also - You cant even sli 1060's normally, so wasnt expecting much difference with the 1060N, and at 1080p you dont really need more than a 1060- plus it runs cooler than a 980m for similar performance

I'm talking about a broader range of laptops, not just the 18, which does need it's iGPU disabled for SLI anyways, so no 1070 SLI. 1060 is enough for 1080p 60fps, and can OC much higher, but I prefer 120HZ or higher if possible, ex 1080 ti

True. and aw18 can only do 60hz for the most part :( (think i heard theres a few rare 120hz models)

and i need a better gpu in my main rig, im rocking a 1060 6gb, and a 240hz monitor  only a few games i can actually hit 240hz in :(
(fortnight, league of legends, csgo) (pubg is locked to 144hz which i can basically do)

You should have gotten something better than a 8350K, but I'd shoot for a 980 ti or a 1070, they've really come down in price, they're are 1070's floating around for less than $300 USD
