Welcome to *Part 3* of the Alienware M18xR1/R2 "Avenger" Benchmark thread here on NBR. We are pleased to also include the new Alienware 18 "Viking" in the family of über beasts.
Please use this thread to discuss benchmark results, tips, settings and of course post your results for the community to see...

You don't need to have an overclocked Extreme CPU or the latest and greatest video card to post your results. The only requirement for posting your benchmark results is a desire to have fun and show others what your hardware is capable of. Your beast can be completely stock or wickedly overclocked... nobody should ever feel excluded on the basis of hardware grade or lack of experience.

A Word of Caution on Benchmarking

While benchmarking and number chasing can be loads of fun, please be aware that this often involves pushing your system to its limits. It can and will stress your components. Do so at your own risk - nobody is responsible for this but you. Be sure you monitor temperatures and maintain proper awareness of your system's behavior.

    Benchmark Utilities and Apps

There is a nearly endless list of utilities and apps which can be used to benchmark your system. The core enthusiast group will have plenty of suggestions - so ask away.

Futuremark has become the defacto standard for overclockers and benching addicts. They have a list of products as long as your arm, and some of them are now available through Steam. There are limited "free" versions of their most popular tools. Visit the Futuremark Store for more details.

Other than Futuremark, there are tons of component benchmarks that focus on specific hardware. Below are just a few examples.

    Gaming Benchmarks

Many of the latest games include a benchmark tool. There are also countless other benchmarks that use your installed games or simulate gameplay. You can also use Fraps to measure your in-game framerate performance. Below are a few examples.

    Forum Rules and Benching Etiquette

As with all threads here on NBR, please remember the forum rules when posting. Stay on topic in this thread as much as possible. Anything relating to performance tuning, benching and overclocking is fine, but this is not a future hardware speculation thread. If you have questions limited to CPU overclocking and "how to", bear in mind we do have a special thread devoted to that subject. Here is a link for Sandy, Ivy and Haswell CPU overclocking discussion: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...ad-learn-how-share-tips-here.html#post7493781.

It is easy to get excited and passionate about benching, but nobody wants to be told that their baby is ugly. Being an enthusiastic fanboy is fine, but use of profanity, bickering and being openly rude is never acceptable. This includes, for example, making insulting or belittling comments directed toward the fanboy of a different video card brand. This sort of behavior will not be tolerated. Please take a moment to review the Forum Rules before posting.

NOTE: Posting massive images is a violation of forum rules. Any images over 500x500 must be resized, thumbnailed with links to full size images, added as a file attachment or placed within a spoiler. Images embedded within posts that do not meet these requirements are subject to removal by moderators without notice. Habitual repeat offenders may receive infractions for not abiding by forum rules. It is easy to resize, use spoilers, add file attachments or use thumbnails for your images. If you do not know how to do this and need help, please feel free to ask. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation with this.

As a matter of etiquette, please don't make excuses for lousy scores. Comments like "yeah, but he used AC" or "I could have done better if..." do not impress anyone. Instead of making excuses, ask for help improving your results and the forum members with lots of experience will be glad to provide some suggestions. Remember, you ain't got to lie to kick it.

    Leader Board Requirements

If you want your numbers posted to the leader board, that takes more than achieving a top score. You will need to qualify your results with proper screen shots and links to online results where applicable. We adhere to HWBOT.org guidelines and cheats are not permitted. Examples of cheats are disabling tessellation with an AMD-powered system or enabling PPU with an NVIDIA-powered system. As a general rule, if your Futuremark results are not valid due to non-standard settings they will not receive any credit here and will not be added to the leader board. (Using current AMD and NVIDIA beta drivers that Futuremark has not approved yet is acceptable.)

Screen shots must include at least one instance of GPU-Z (Graphics Card tab) and 3 instances of CPU-Z (CPU tab, Mainboard tab and Memory tab) to qualify for the leaderboard. All Futuremark results must include a validation link. The exception is benchmarks that measure only the CPU performance (wPrime, SuperPI, ThrottleStop, etc.) do not need to include GPU-Z, but including it to identify your system specs is fine if you wish. If you do not want your results treated as official scores, there are no requirements to adhere to these screen shot rules or validation link guidelines.

Hey look, guys. Here's my best benchmark so far.

The final decision on whether or not a benchmark result qualifies for the leader board is at the discretion of johnksss.

The most important thing to remember about benching is to have fun seeing how far you can push your beast.

The XenForo software broke the tables in this post. You can view it as intended over here: LINK

It is saved as a JPG here only as a point of reference. The leaderboard is no longer maintained because XenForo does not provide the proper support for it.

Those are some awesome scores you posted above, Mr. Fox. Better than the AW18! :D I really hope Alienware addresses the power limitation issues presented with the latest hardware in the AW18. Otherwise, overclocking (at least at that level) may begin to be a thing of the past, and we can't have that. ;)

    Hey guys.

i finally got round to benchmarking my m18x (specs in sig). ive changed main hdd to an 840 samsung.

ive done 3d mark vantage (performance setting) and got 22580
    3d mark 11 b.e (full , centered) came in at around 6201

    driver version is 9.18.13.1422.

    memory clock 1800mhz
    coreclock 324mhz.

does this sound right? seems a bit low to me although i never benchmarked nor do i know much about it (did a bit of google searching and looked through ~10 pages of previous therad) before decided to ask you guys.

also, intially my windows performance index showed roughly 7.5-7.9 for graphics...now it shows 6 after i changed hdd to ssd i believe? is there anyway to diagnose issue if there is one?

Can you post links to your 3D Mark 11 score?

Regarding the drop in your windows index score - did you make the SSD your primary drive ? If so that's probably why your score dropped. I'm assuming your SSD is a smaller capacity than the HDD you replaced. Windows index will take your lowest score, therefore the SSD size is likely smaller than your HDD.. Correct?

yeah my ssd is 250gb vs the 500hdd..however before i made the switch, my hard drive transfer rate
was 5.9...this went up to 7.x...however at same time the graphics one went down to 6....i understand how the final scoring system works, just not sure why my graphics score was affected

ill post link tomorrow, was too lazy to register today! any preliminary ideas? did another google search minus the m18x, and found a few clevo results which seem to indicate that my score is in line with what i should be expecting ? atleast for 3dmark11...

Ok so managed to beat my last 3D Mark results here: 8256
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M18xR2

    3D Mark 11 Score: 11172
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M18xR2

Pretty happy with that even tho its like an increase of only 150.

Also im a complete noob with read a write speeds but here is my latest ATTO bench:
    SSD Bench.jpg
Not sure if that is a good score or not!

    Its 2 Mushkin Chronos 240gb SSD's in Raid-0

Both of those are good results. The latest drivers from AMD have made a nice difference.

Mushkin SSDs perform well. I like my Mushkin Atlas mSATA. I am used to the sleeker minimalist UI of Crystal DiskMark bench, so I had to stop and look closer at the ATTO bar graphs. Looks good to me, bro.

Here's my 3dmark11 score completely stock. I think everything looks normal, if someone can confirm for me. I don't know if it helps to disable screen savers (I had the screen update the desktop background every 5 minutes) or everything else to have less load on your system, but this was with all my general apps installed...I just figured I should run it to make sure everything is generally in order...

Hey guys. I just recently got my new m18.

I'm keen to run some benchmarks, but have never done this before and not sure what software to use.

I'm not ready to make a commitment regarding purchasing any benching software yet, so need to run something free.

Would you be so kind and point me to software I should use?

I'm also concerned regarding the performance of my GPUs (780m SLI) as they run very slow in Crysis 3 (FRAPS reports 20FPS).

Rafix73, woodzstack and Red Line were very helpful and suggested I uninstall the drivers and Nvidia software and do a reinstall. Will do this tonight and see how this impacts the in-game performance.

    My plan is:

    1) run a set of benchmarks now
    2) restore the factory drivers and run benchmarks
    3) install the latest Nvidia drivers and run benchmarks
    4) Attempt a first ever OC (won't be able to do it without your help :))

EDIT: I'm not ready to make commitment on buying benching software
    EDIT2: I meant Crysis 3

    Thanks Mr. Fox

Isn't the software listed commercial though - i.e., you need to pay for it in order to use it?

    Should I install them all?

btw congrats on the FB post from Alienware! That's impressive :)

    Thank you for the compliment.

No, all of them are either free, or offer a free version with somewhat reduced features. So, download as many as you would like. I have just about every one of them. Those have a reduced feature free version don't get worse benchmark scores than the purchased version... only difference is typically that you cannot run customized settings on the limited feature versions. With some (3DMark11, I think,) you cannot see your score in offline mode or save the results to a file with the free version.

Anyone tried this yet? I had never heard of it until now. x264 HD Benchmark
    x264HD.JPG

Edit: OK, this one is definitely not for the faint at heart... Very intense CPU test, LOL. Took close to an hour to run and pushing 95-100°C at a solid 4.3GHz on standard air cooling. I will have to try this with AC cooling at 4.5GHz+ when time permits sometime in the near future. Be sure to consult the readme file for instructions on how/what to install and how to launch it. Could not get it to work with Windows 8 due to some strange "access denied" errors, but here is a run on Windows 7.

I recently Repasted.. I went over 100 degree's a few too many times recently found IC Diamond to loose its ability to cool after that. Seriously the dell stock TIM wins on endurance.

Probably not, unless you mean a strictly stock 2920XM. It cannot compare in terms of performance potential. Running an XM CPU at stock clocks is a waste of awesome hardware. That would be similar to comparing the 2920XM to a 2820QM/2860QM, which are very similar where no overclocking is involved with the XM.

How does the CPU score compare? I will have to look at your score again, but I suspect the P11861 is being driven more by the 780M SLI than the CPU. The 2920XM will ultimately outperform the Haswell MQ processor due to strong overclocking abilities which the 4800MQ lacks.

    Mr. Fox,

I initially purchased and installed 3DMark, but I'm seeing a lot of people use 3DMark 11. This is just an older version of the same program, correct?

    Thanks.

PS: Should I get PCMark as well? I am not sure of the differences between the two.

Just run my first ever benchmark! Special moment for me ^^

Run the 3Dmark (complete set - the over 1gb installation file)

My score with the current driver (the one that does not seem to perform) - 311.48

ICE STORM: 130037 (graphics driver not approved)
    grapshics score: 288531
    physics score: 44494
CLOUD GATE: 21318 (graphics driver not approved)
    grapshics score: 65140
    physics score: 6355
    FIRE STRIKE: 7436
    grapshics score: 9432
    physics score: 9027
    combined score: 2608

    SLI / CrossFire On
    Memory 3,072 MB
    Core clock 324 MHz
    Memory clock 2,500 MHz
Driver name NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M
    Driver version 9.18.13.1148

This was the first benchmark instance.

The Laptop was asleep, I lift the lid, closed off all (considered by me) unnecessary processes and run the 3Dmark full test.

    Capture1.PNG

Please let me know what you think about this score - i.e., is this expected from stock hardware (details in my sig.)?

    Cheers guys.

After days of experimenting with different drive configurations I've decided this setup will suit me until I get restless :D
Thought I'd post up some pretty impressive results.

    Its 2 x 1TB 7.2K rpm HDD's in Raid 0
with the Cache acceleration coming from a SATA III SSD.

    HDD Raid 0 SATA 3 cache.PNG

2TB at that speed is a pretty good deal I think

I've just updated the driver to 326.80 and the frame rate is now between 35-60 :) All settings maxed-out!

I'll run another set of benchmarks soon to compare with the previous results.

I'm still not quite happy with the FPS, but it is already pretty much twice the performance.

Would you guys help me OC my GPUs?
