Recently purchased an M18x with the following setup:

If I wanted to add 4 or 8GB of RAM what should I get that would be compatible?

BTW, mine was produced and shipped pretty quickly. Ordered on the 20th and shipped on the 25th. $2,500 via AAFES.

Well, if you go for anything over 1333, be sure to change the whole lot otherwise it will only run at the lowest speed....meaning if you bought, for example, any 1600mhz+ 8gb Kit, it will come as 2 Dimm's.....if you stick 'em in slots A and B, the Dell ram in slots C and D will downclock it.....

Seems odd to have 8gb configured as four lots of 2gb.....I thought normally they would have used x2 4gb in DIMM slots A+B...actually, just checked and it is advertised as x4 2gb sticks....Dell being cheapskates I imaine!

Oh, congrats on your new purchase and welcome to NBR!

Yeah - they do as its cheaper to use 4 2gb Dimm's rather than 2 4gb ones I reckon.

Bit stoopid of Dell really cos if you want to upgrade to ram faster than what it shipped with (1333mhz in your case) , you have to remove the sticks from C and D slots which involves opening the system and removing the keyboard. If you dont remove or upgrade those sticks, whatever ram you put in slots A and B (the easy ones to get to) will get downclocked to the speed of the ram in slots C and D.

If your comfortable opening up your laptop, its fine. Quite simple and straightforward really. One of the forum members posted a good guide with pics here to show you how its done. (to get at the slots under the keyboard)
