So I am one of the fortunate individuals who has a M18xr2 with 7970 crossfires running great. Theyve been OC'd at 900/1450 for over two years with zero issues. But now they are showing their lack of power. Battlefield 1 Beta on ultra is at 45FPS while the two year old Shadows of Mordore were good for 100fps, so the time has come.
Ive read about the headaches with running 980m SLI. Will the 970 SLI be a worthy bump in power to future proof it for a couple years?
I love the R2, I want to keep it going as long as I can.
Thoughts on upgrading to the R290m Xfire?

If I were in your shoes I would go for a single 980M. Then if you think you need to later you can always go 980M SLI.

Go for the single 980m first. Most issues seem to have been almost resolved and a single 980m is better that two 7970m. I used to have them till they died.

Skip the R9 M290X and 970M, go for a 980M single then add a second when funds permit.

M18xR2 Dual SLI 970m upgrade from M7970 xfire - worth it?
