M18x r2 Pushing the 3840QM through overclocking?

I read several threads mentioning the results of using the 3940XM even up to 4,6GHZ on a single core (but unstable, it seems).

Seeing how the 3840QM looks to be almost identical aside from the 100mhz and 10 W difference, I am looking the get the most of a single core ( avoiding damages of course).

As far as I get everything correctly I should need:
- Unlocked A12 Bios
-triple heatsink CPU
-"better" thermal paste (liquid crystal)
- proper 330W power unit (of course)

I havn't overclocked before, but I guess I am supposed to change the CPU values in the Bios little by little checking the tempartures, correct?

Getting anything over 70(?)Celcius should be avoided and changes reverted, I assume?

Do any of you have have experience with "healthy" settings that push this CPU for the m18x r2?
Or should I maybe replace it with a more overclocking freindly CPU ? (3940XM, 2920xm maybe?)

You could just try it and see how far you can get. No unlocked bios needed for OCing the CPU. Just enable an OC profile (recommend to start with #1) and set the values step by step. Do a stress test and temperature check after each change.

Good paste (and the stronger fan model of the r2) could be very handy.

Max single core possible on 3840qm should be 4.2 GHz.

70° is desirable, but around up to 85° when OCed still not that dangerous, imo.

Liquid metal is a good and handy fellow, but needs special handling and being veeery cautious when applying.

 

Thats a lot simpler than I expected, thank you. Is there any recommended software for setting the profile and stress testing or should I simply run a demanding game or program for tit?

 

The profiles need to be set in BIOS upfront, and then can be fine-tuned with Throttlestop.

For stressing most people use prime95. I use the stress test of CPUz, also stresses all cores.

Temps can be checked with Throttlestop.

3840QM can be max overclocked to 4Ghz all core.
It has a 4x turbo multiplier available.

Point of the extreme is the unlocked multiplier, I can hit 4.7Ghz.

My 3820qm was limited to 3.9ghz because of the locked multiplier.

 

Wow, 4.7 Ghz is really impressive. For now I am curious in only testing one core use and having 4.7Ghz would exceed my expectations.

Does it run stable in your case? I guess using liquid metal as thermal paste is unavoidable to reach such levels.

 

No liquid metal, IC Diamond. 4.7Ghz requires max fans and good ambient temps.

I can do up to 4.5Ghz without using max fans but I normally just use around 4.3Ghz.

You won't get 4.7Ghz even on single core. The 3840QM is locked. You need 3920XM or 3940XM if you want to go higher.

3840QM can do 4 turbo bins which means:

Stock:

1-core: 3.80Ghz
2-core: 3.70Ghz
3/4-core: 3.60Ghz

+4 turbo bins:

1-core: 4.20Ghz
2-core: 4.10Ghz
3/4-core: 4.00Ghz

 

My bad, i misunderstood that part.
So my option for now are the +4 turbo bins you mentioned. Using Cpu-z and throttlestop ´, in combiantion with adjusting Bios values should do the trick, right?

If I consider upgrading , would the same procedure be fitting for the 3940xm as well? Just plug and play, adjusting values, no unlocked bios needed?

Yes, same with every CPU, no matter if qm or xm. Better also read sm guides online.

 

You can probably just go to BIOS (A11 unlocked) and increase the multipliers +4 and it will probably work.

In my case I didn't need any extra voltage at all

 

thank you. If I consider upgarding to the 3920xm and GTX 1070, would the unlocked A11 be enough, or should I jump to the unlocked A12?
