I'm shocked you haven't run into this before. It's a known issue on the M17xR4 and M18xR2 and other laptops (not just Alienware) with Sound Blaster Recon3Di. Have you tried putting the laptop to sleep using the Start menu Sleep button, waiting about 10 seconds and waking it up? That almost always make it start working again.

It seems to finally be fixed for me with newer drivers. See this thread and the information I have recently posted.

    Thanks Mr Fox

Yes, I have not had this problem before. I have had some sound corruption very rarely but has happened here and there but a simple restart fixes the problem.
I fixed this problem yesterday.. I should have tried the PC sleep & wake-up method would have been easier ( next time i know ), I did a system restored and luckily I had installed some Direct x Updates and it created a restore point the day before my problem started happening. Restored back and everything is working good again

Try the driver mentioned in the link I gave you. I've been using it for months now and it has never happened again.

I am trying to download the drivers from the catalog but the site is not working properly. I can add the item to the basket but i cant check out/download the driver.
    Can you upload the driver?

Here you go, bro. Sound Blaster Recon3Di 6.0.0.2055.7z

Uninstall, reboot. Run CCleaner. Install this new one through Device Manager with the "have disk" method. If you want the Control Panel, install the new driver first, then run the original Dell driver setup, choose the custom installation option and deselect the driver to keep in from installing.

It's normal, when it's happen with me I just delete audio driver and install him again, it will solve your problem at some time (one month probably)

M18x r2 have problem all the time with audio device identification.

    Dear Mr.Fox,

I cannot express it well enough, how thankful I am for your help. Since I've bought the laptop back in 2013, I've never had any issues with either audio drivers or the connectors, which I feared the most. About 40 minutes ago this happened - I played Carmaggedon for a while, then it froze and the sound became this typical stuttered jammed static noise. I shut down the laptop and after turning it on I had this exact problem. I thought for a sec - damn, not again, would I honestly have to replace the jacked connectors or something? I deleted everything I could in the device manager, yet it never worked. After putting the laptop to sleep for 10 sec it worked! Thank you so much!
