Specs in the sig. My cards are overclocked to 830/1130 and Ultra is unplayable! I'm getting 15-22 fps! Even on high settings, I'm getting 30-50 fps.

Is this game really that demanding?!! Are you all having a similar experience? This would certainly be the first game I couldn't play at Ultra around 50-60 fps... Even BF3 is 60+.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll give Radeon Pro a try when I feel like taking a break. I'm okay playing at high settings for now :)

so i would emagine that you are only using one GPU? if one GPU handles the game at high settings, gotta say... thats quite impressive.
6990s are indeed very powerful gpus.

yeah I am sure once you use both cards you should be getting 60~ FPS on both solutions.

That's why I use Radeon Pro. I know with that all my games will always use XF even if there is no CAP out for it.

Hell with FFXIV without Radeon Pro I get Vertical sync issues and it never uses my second card and that's a year old game! Although with Radeon pro FPS doubles and no VS issues.

Well assassin creed was not an RPG but if you enjoyed that game you most likely will enjoy this. The elder scrolls series is one of the most revered rpg series out there so its a great place to start.

isnt 60 frames per second good enough ? I play most games at 40 frames per second. I dont see how its unplayable. Turn down your settings until you get a smooth 30-40 frames per second. Im sure it would be VERY playable.

You went green about 2 months ago, Bro :p
Give it a few days and you will get the support...

The Ultimate RPG was the Baldur's Gate series. Elder Scrolls is a beast of its own and though it's technically within the RPG "range" I'd put it aside as something unique.

there is a bug that causes the frame rates to dive. first of all, do not run with xfire enabled until we get drivers or CAPS for the game from AMD. xfire does not work / scale at all.

when you disable xfire start the game and it should run fine. if the frames are low you can alt-tab out of the game and then alt-tab back into it. when you alt-tab you have to cycle at least two times for the game to pop back up. there is another bug where the screen windows cursor may still be present when alt-tabbing. if the frames are still low re-load your save point / game and it should get the frames back up to normal.

i am maxxing out the game with a single 6990m averaging 30+ fps. i have only played the opening part of the game where the dragon attacks. when the camera faces the execution you should be getting about 30 fps, depending on your overclock. if you are getting 15-20 fps you need to perform the alt-tab and re-load trick.

edit; when i say maxed out i also mean max out the advanced tab in the options before the game starts so it truelly is as max as it gets.

Turn on AFR with Radeon Pro, it works perfectly. However, parts of the main menu will flash green when exiting the game but that's not a big deal. I'm running it in Ultra with 2xAA/8xAF and seeing 60 fps most of the time.

I'm using 11.10 WHQL with CAP 4, Skyrim CF works and I get good frame rates.

I use Ultra settings with the AA dialed back to 2x. With 8x AA it was way too slow.

Should only get better with new drivers/CAP.

I get no slowdowns whatsoever on both systems. Hell the game is not that demanding tbh.

Performance was ok with Xfire, was getting 15-45 fps on Ultra settings.

Disabled Xfire in CCC and now im getting 50-65 fps on Ultra settings.

For me, untill drivers are updated for Skyrim, I'll be running it on 1 card.

I'm curious how you're getting 60FPS on 11.9 Cap 4 with 1 card and with 1 or 2 cards I'm getting 28 - 33 FPS. Do you have everything cranked? What are you're settings at?

I have xfire enabled on 6990 cards and get about 55 - 60 fps on ultra. Once in a while it dips to 45 - 50 but consistantly stays at the 60ish. I use radeon pro but can't figure out where AFR is. I do use speedfan to keep my fans at 100 percent since i have the second card fan bug.

Nope I use speedfan, crank the fans to 100 percent, it works fine. It does stop when it goes to sleep so i just disable it. I didn't know it wasn't supose to work but it does. I don't trust HWinfo at all.

I tried the latest (4.45) version and can't set the fans. When I click configure there's no option to choose the "desired" and "warning" entries for GPU fans.
    Any hints?

Edit: Can choose the settings but nothing happens the fans still work using the stock pattern...

there is an fps limiter called Dxtory. download it and run the free trial version. go to the advanced tab and set the frame limiter down to 35 fps.

in the "my games" folder open SkyrimPrefs.ini and input iPresentInterval=0 in the [Display] field.

under the [Controls] field delete the line fMouseHeadingSensitivity=0.0125 add these two lines, fMouseHeadingXScale=0.0100 and fMouseHeadingYScale=0.0100 in it's place.

Dxtory and iPresentInterval=0 will smooth out the game and completely eliminate the stutters. the mouse tweaks will eliminate the uneven verticle axis speed and it will function normally. you might have to change the mouse sensitivity within the game.

I only use it to crank the fans all the way up and leave them there. It is a little loud but livable. Here are some screen caps of my main screen and my settings. I havn't messed with thresholds and what not. All I do is change the %fan under speed and all of the fans crank up. The tems stay nice and cool. It is a temp fix until the 6990's are fixed or until the nvidia cards come back in stock.

Wow! Had to enable Dell support in the options tab and reload the program to see the Dell chip fans! Great job! +1 rep

Edit! No stuttering and the temps are ridiculously cool during gaming! You will be repped again when the system allows me.
Also, please start a new thread dedicated to speedfan fan controls, many will find this very useful.

Yes, I played a few games to check the temps and the max for the GPU was 60C, lol. CPU - 55C but that's with a fixed 2.7GHz speed, so no wonder.

max fans does not really do anything besides delay heat-soak on the cooling system. in other words, you will not be getting lower temps just because max fans is enabled with a normal extended gaming session. normal fans will also reach max fans when temps require it to.

With the latest Nvidia drivers, running tthe game at Ultra FXAA enabled and resolution set to 2560x1440, getting great performace between 45-60fps with some drops to 30fps in heavy fog areas... this game clearly does not need that much power to run.

Yes and no. Most games won't stress the CPU 100% of the time and thus if you have the fans set to 100% there will be no crazy temps since it takes some time for the temps to climb up and each dip in the CPU load would immediately bring the temps down again.

Also, normal fans will reach 100% @ 85-86C and will always go in cycles between mid 70s to mid 80s, while with the maxed fans you will never see 85C ;)

What you say is true for Prime but you can safely game at 4.5Ghz if your fans are maxed. Give it a try.

Here's a screenie of my idle temps with speedfan set to 50% (barely audible). For comparison, with stock fans my cards would occasionally climb to 70C and CPU to 65C to trigger the first threshold.

I saw that on guru3d (I think?), just wasn't sure what it actually does. Haven't been able to find out what it is or where it came from.

For the most part running radeonpro on AFR w/ AFR-D3D-Friendly profile solves all of the performance issues (w/ vsync as I had a few issues where the Conjured sword effect would only display the purple outline). The only one that really annoys me is the flickering shadows. Anyone figured this one out yet?

Just want confirmation on this one, a few of the shallow water puddles in the games dungeons are orange/purple which looks like either crappy textures or corrupted something. Can anyone confirm this is the way its supposed to look and I haven't broken anything?

    Edit:
Just thought I would put this here as it's kind of weird. When alt-tabbing back on forth (don't ask why, I dunno) the framerates will spike back up properly. Roughly the equivalent of changing to High -> Ultra or whatever it was called in Crysis 2. So like the crysis 2, the first thing I do for proper xfire is alt-tab back and forth. Keeps the framerate locked at 60 properly.

I agree I need more information on what that file does before I use it. Still SlickDude80 thanks for the link.

As far as the issues that your having with radeon pro I can't seem to duplicate them. The game works fine for me using radeon pro with the same settings that another thread member posted on here.

Game runs very smoothly for me with RP on Ultra, but with AA set to 2x. Otherwise everything lags like hell. Haven't noticed any shadow issues.

The ESC menu is flickering though, but that doesn't bother me that much.

The textures aren't very detailed. A bit of a disappointment. But then again, neither Oblivion nor Fallout 3 had very detailed textures. Seems to be Bethesda's thing.

In regards to some of the shallow water puddles being orange/purple in the dungeons are you sure they are not oil as I think you can set them on fire and there is also often jugs above them you can use as traps by shooting them with an arrow?

No its oil - you can set it on fire and enemys running through it get some serious amount of damage. Use your flames spell and try it out.

Btw. the atidll from above worked for me - now I can play it on ultra instead of high and with constant framerates because now it seems both cards work correctly. Before that I had issues with unexplainable FPS drops and only 30+ frames on high settings. Performance strongly increased with the .dll from above.
    M17xR2 with two 5870m and using 10.9 with Cap4.

    Try go to
    C:\Users\Your-name\Documents\My Games\Skyrim

    open SkyrimPrefs.ini
and go to this line fShadowDistance=8000.0000

change it into 1000 or 2000 or any number u find it suit your taste.
the shadow won't spread far but it has much better sharpness no more pixellated. It works for me
