    What do you guys think?

    Will this work?

    108.jpg

Edited: due to the over size of the card where it meet my fingers , the video connector is in the way. This prevent the card to be seated. :(

I will try and see if the aw 17 R1 have clearance.

Nope, lack of power connector. You could try with your other 1080 tho.

    Wrong.

I think the power connector makes for the best scenario if you splice the power off the DC jack like what was done for the Ranger with the 980DT mod.

The more troubling aspect is cooling.

That being said Im not sure about running the 1080 in SG mode.

Would that card fit in the Ranger or would it conflict with the CPU heatsink?

No go due to obstruction of the video connector. Card is too big on the right side.

Yeah you would have to chop out that part of the frame as well, a lot of work compared to the 1070 for certain.

Just a bit longer, 2060 will be announced soon.

Let's see if we can find 2060/2070 in MXM format lol

I'm really hoping one comes out that we can plop in our Alienware 18's and m18xr2's. Though I will say my 980M's sli are still going strong!

I just pulled out my dead Alienware 18 motherboard and it looks like a possibility that the card will fit , with a some modifications. I will update later, probably tomorrow when i get the dremel out.

No ... just the mounting of the card itself.

I don't have a working Alienware 18 , just a dead motherboard. If i can get the card to install on the dead motherboard with some adjustment , i might look into getting a working unit.

No I didn't. too many obstruction. The only GTX 1080 that would fit in the chassis is the GTX 1080 from ASROCK Deskmini.

It will run LVDS in SG mode.

Just search Deskmini GTX 1080 on google and you will find it.

Gpu die is located differently from other kinds of cards so most don't attempt with that one.

Valid point, I didn't pay enough attention to spot it. Would probably need a custom heatsink then...

Does anyone know what wattage the extra power port needs for the regular 1080?

Someone posted somewhere about a mxm to nvme adapter so perhaps there is one which will let you draw power from the spare mxm port to supplement the 1080?

Would this mean that it would be possible to use the unused MXM slot for an NVMe drive?

Dont think so, cant run 2 GPU's in SG mode, so by the reasoning I dont think other devices would function either.

Of course I cant say for certain. I lack that knowledge.

Ahh that makes sense, unfortunately. Was hoping the machine would realize it wasn't a GPU and let it work.

When you say you cant run 2x devices in SG do you mean no power will be delivered to the secondary mxm port or that two actually running 2x cards in SG is not possible, I.e. they wont both work at the same time in SLI?

It should work. Not being able to use 2 GPU's is kinda expected if they are not running in SLI, most likelly due to OS limitation, the slot should still be powered up and the PCIe connection should still be working, given that its the card connected into the slot that signals the system to enable PCIe communications.

That's really what I am hoping would happen.

So in MSI laptops then, where is the aux power for the 1080 coming from and what voltage / power is it?

In SG mode, both slots actually work. Even BIOS will see two GPUs. I think the issue was with windows BSOD.

So NVMe in Slot 2 should work.

Yes, Linux might be able to handle the situation.

Think about it, people have ran iGPU + 2x SLI GPUs on mainstream desktop platforms fine.

I think it's just a matter of how things are wired internally on the M18x.

That is the mythic card from the ages! It looks like it might just fit. I'd scale up a photo of it, print it lifesize and see if it clears everything. Then you just have to hope the card can draw enough power without throttling too badly.

Even if it would fit, would be power throttled in near any machine you would want to use it in

It has a TDP of 150W allegedly, my 1070 gets to 135W easily during gaming so I thought perhaps the 330W brick will be enough?

You would have to see what power draw is possible with the R2. Might have to pore through the overclocking threads to see if either there is a maximum from a single MXM in the R2 or maybe a kind soul will repost.

From memory it's either 180W per mxm port or 220W, hence why I thought it would work, but I am not 100% sure.
