Hi folks, my m18x r1 suddenly turned off and started exhausting black smoke and a horrible smell of fried electronics. I opened up the machine and found the issue [IMG] :(h ttps://photos.app.goo.gl/XVXNMKqih7M8no8h6) but now my question is, how likely is it my CPU and GPU died together with the mainboard? Because im actually sourcing the parts for an upgrade to an R2 interior, but i would like to just reuse the hardware if its not fried, because its mostly used by my son to play fortnite and gta v , and the 2960XM with the GTX880M is handling those games fine. But what do you think did they die with the Mainboard??

Pretty rare that this happened. What GPU were you running ?

Probably a MOSFET that died on the board, GPU and CPU are probably safe. I am selling my M18x R2, whole or barebones if you are interested.

You can still get two drives into the machine until you find the introposer, the msata slot and the sata bay for the dvd drive. Be mindful that the flat flex connector on the R2 is total crap and I ruined mine, if it breaks there are replacements online. The cable isn't bad at all but the sata connectors are not tight fitting compared to other introposers, one can cram a lot of storage compared to newer machines and I had 8TB worth of drives in there at one point.

This is R1 so no mSATA slot.

Only hope for now and it's very expensive: https://ru.aliexpress.com/item/3299...rchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_53

Could also replace the disc drive with a 2.5" caddy adapter as said

Sad to see this go feet up like so, but would you consider having this repaired or rather just rid off it and upgrade to m18xr2? I can offer to either repair this board for you or byy it from you with the remaining sister board and sata connector and caddy for my project. PM me if interested.

This is a unique computer and parts aren't available anymore. I have a spare one for myself actually, maybe I'll consider selling it in the future.

Sadly it seems like the power surge killed my 2960XM cpu, so i have had to use a 2630qm i had to get it running. I tested the cpu in my m17x r4 and got 7 beeps and no lcd turning on, the same happened in the m18x after the mainboard switch but it works with the 2630qm so i guess the 2960xm is dead.
