    Hello Guys

I have steadfastly stuck to windows 7 on my machine but had to do a clean install yesterday and now windows update wont work. It just constantly searches for updates but never finds any. I have even left it running all day with the same result. I assume that windows have screwed with it to "encourage" users to switch to 10.

Anyway before I do switch to 10 is there anything I need to be aware of please? I am on 7970s..

    Cheers for the pointers..

It might be possible to resurrect a functioning Windows Update scan on your Windows 7 install.

tl-dr: just install these, and try again
    April 2015 Servicing Stack Update (3020369) - http://download.microsoft.com/downl...020-EC41D56B074F/Windows6.1-KB3020369-x64.msu
    April 2016 Post-SP1 Convenience Rollup (312557) - http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._2dafb1d203c8964239af3048b5dd4b1264cd93b9.msu
    WU Agent Update 2014 - http://download.windowsupdate.com/w...e/7.6.7600.320/WindowsUpdateAgent-7.6-x64.exe
    Sept 2016 Update - http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._2bb9bc55f347eee34b1454b50c436eb6fd9301fc.msu

    LONG STORY -

For my enterprise O/S deployments, I install the following out of the gate:
    + Windows 7 with SP1
    + Kernel-Mode Driver Framework version 1.11 update (2685811)
+ .NET 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 (some device drivers assume .NET as a prereq, so I just force it here)
+ The balance of the OEM Device Drivers, in the correct order
    + March 2013 Post-SP1 Update Pack for Businesses (2775511)
    + April 2015 Servicing Stack Update (3020369)
    + April 2016 Post-SP1 Convenience Rollup (312557)

^^^ The Post-SP1 Convenience Rollup (312557) requires the April 2015 Servicing Stack update (3020369). 2775511 appears to include a few fixes that 312557 does not, this is by design:

    --
We intentionally did not include any specific post-Service Pack 1 updates in convenience rollup 3125574 for which the following conditions are true:

+ They don’t have broad applicability.
    + They introduce behavior changes.
+ They require additional user actions, such as making registry settings.

    --

So you may want to skip 2775511 ... it's up to you.

As for your Windows Agent agent problem .. you might want to also install the latest WU Agent.
For a list of builds, see - http://www.potentengineer.com/windows-update-agent-build-numbers-for-windows-7/

You might want to start with:

    Win2008R2 - http://download.windowsupdate.com/w...e/7.6.7600.320/WindowsUpdateAgent-7.6-x64.exe

+ and try the troubleshooting information listed here (incl. the FixIt Tool):
    See - http://plugable.com/2016/06/08/windows-7-wont-update-what-to-do/

+ then see if the WU scan runs to completion on your Alienware M18x R2. .. if not ...

WHAT TO DO IF THERE ARE PROBLEMS

While the steps above will get Windows 7 up-to-date for most users, there are still problems that can arise. For example, if you tried to run Windows Update before applying the Convenience Rollup, the older version of Windows Update Agent may have caused additional problems with the update process that would need to be resolved. In some cases, this will mean doing a thorough reset of Windows Update.

    1. Close the Windows Update window.
    2. Stop the Windows Update Service.
    i. Run a Command Prompt as Administrator (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right-click Command Prompt > Select "Run as administrator")
ii. Enter the following command without quotes: "net stop wuauserv"

NOTE: If the command does not show success, run the command again

    3. Run the Microsoft FixIt tool for Windows Update issues.
    4. Install the latest version of the Windows Update Agent.
    ● Be sure to choose the correct version for your operating system and system type.
    5. Restart your PC.
    6. Run Windows Update again.
    ● This may take a couple of hours to complete!

This should resolve most issues with updating Windows 7. If you are still encountering problems installing Windows 7 updates, you may want to check for your specific issue in Microsoft TechNet. Alternatively, it may be worth considering updating to Windows 10 before the free update period expires on July 29th, 2016

+ You might want to try .. June 2016 Windows Update Agent Patch (3161647) Sept 2016 re-release (3172605)

If you're ready to just move to Windows 10: Microsoft does actually recommend Windows 10 to users who are having problems with Windows Updates on Windows 7. We also observed similar problems with Windows XP late in its service life (2011), FWIW.

    NO.

That's what Micro$haft is hoping you would do and it's the very reason that getting updates without the following workaround ends up taking forever.

They are making it really difficult to get updates for Win7 fresh install in hopes of getting people to just give up and install Win 10 NSA Walmart Edition (complete with the NSA back-door and Walmart ads on your desktop!) instead.

This is absolutely not conspiracy theory. This is the reason it takes forever to get updates.

I encountered the same challenge a few months ago when I had to clean reinstall Win 7 on my R2. Installing one particularly update in combination with forcestopping winaserv via services.msc got me through it but the ordeal is still a bit blurry.

    Here's the workaround:

    http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-...indows-7-update-stuck-checking-updates-3.html

    Particularly this comment:

    " SOLVED:

    Windows 7 SP1 64

Extremely frustrated for many days trying every solution posted on the Internet. Then finally I found this comment on Softpedia's website and it absolutely works (very easy - but why should we have to do this?):

To resolve this issue: first install KB3145739 manually. Go to Microsoft website to download and then install, even if your Installed History already shows this update.
Next you should restart and finally you can check for updates in manual mode.
It takes between 5 or 10 minutes.

I dug out a laptop i had not used for a few years. It had win 7 sp1. It wouldnt find any updates either. I was pissed because after sitting so long there should have been a ton. I left it overnight and foundbit had done some updstes overnight. Not sure if its up to date or not.
