After 4 years of using a low-end Toshiba desktop replacement, i've finally gotten around to ordering an Alienware 18. I could've gotten one with 16GB of RAM if I waited another month, but i've gotten impatient and went ahead with 8GB, which i'll upgrade later. I've been browsing through the forum and have found at least 2 posts where someone's AW18 started smoking and needed to be sent back. I know that this isn't the most common problem, but I want to know if there are any statistics on how many people contract problems with the AW18 that are bad enough to require their computer to be sent in?

Also, I know this has probably been asked to death, but how long does it take to ship once it has made it to the prodction phase? I've had problems with Dell all weekend and have had to order 3 times.

The first time was my fault as I supplied the wrong billing address, and the customer service was giving me the runaround, so I cancelled and re-ordered.

The second time, I entered all of my information correctly, but then was sent a voice message and email saying that only part of my payment went through. I called customer service and they told me to call my bank to resolve the issue. I called Wells Fargo and they said that nothing was wrong on their end, and that it must be a problem with Dell. I called Dell again and they told me that I need to verify the college I go to and my student email address for whatever reason. I did that and saw no changes, so I cancelled that order yesterday and immediately re-ordered.

For my third strike yesterday, I ordered using PayPal, and today my order is in production. I would rather shine my 1W laser in both of my eyes then deal with Dell again.

I'm with you, Ive had the run around for about 2 weeks until it was finally sorted and then in production.....then cancelled without a reason of even an email or phone call telling me. So now I restart the awesome cycle. Kind of worried if this is already such a problem before I even get the thing. Who knows if it wont be cancelled again after 2 weeks.

I had the same issue actually. I have a Dell Credit Account and used that for the financing. My order had been in for 1 week before they sent me an email saying that I had to call in to verify the purchase on my account. Once that was done and settled the order then proceeded to be processed. I ordered mine 2/6 and received it on 2/24 a day earlier than they quoted me. I would say mine was in production for a week and then shipping took 3 days.

As long as the money goes through, the process shouldn't take long at all. If there is even the slightest issue with payment, the entire order is cancelled without immediate notification. The estimated date is pretty accurate for the most part. I've rarely had to wait longer than what was estimated. A majority of my orders arrive before the estimated delivery date.

How much earlier? If it's more than 3-4 days, that could be a problem for me.

A couple days sometimes. But it's usually really accurate.

these are very rare problems, i can personally say that dell had problem with their m18x-r2 .... but the new alienware 18 is much better, even if it as some minor problem ( fan speed overclock-ability cripled) i think their redesign paid off. its a very very good gaming laptop.

Agreed! Hopefully Dell will address the overclocking issues and the fan speed tables. Otherwise I'm sure there will be a work around eventually. If your not benchmarking the 18 will perform beyond amazing when gaming.

Well I'm happy you received yours! Is it awesome?

Mine is still in production (reordered March 4th) so hopefully it is not cancelled again.

Spoke to Dell Financial and they couldn't tell me why it was cancelled either. I am in Vancouver Canada and hope that it's out of production and onto shipping soon! Seems like when they re-ordered it they took off the Blue Ray player and instead put in the Dvdrw no blue ray but I haven't even mentioned it given the run around I went through last time. God forbid they would have to re configure a new laptop without restarting the whole process again.

My Estimated Delivery Date is march 24th....hope I get it sooner like you guys. I'll keep you posted.

It's been almost a year, doubt they will ever fix the fans. It's supposed to do that. In their minds, nothing is broken to fix. Sad really

Well, I ordered it on the 4th, the estimated delivery date was the 21st, it shipped today, and is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. This is a whole week ahead of schedule. normally i'd be happy, but I'm on spring break now and have no idea if there's anyone at my college to receive the package. I did a Dell Chat to get them to re-route it to my house, and they said that it could delay receiving it by 1-2 days, but i'd still get it quicker.
