I just purchaed 4 years of Lo-Jack, with a $1k guarantee of recovery for $89.

If anyone is public with their ware I highly recommend some form of anti-theft.

I bought this without looking into details as to how the technology works, apparently, it doesn't matter if a thief reformats or even replaces the data storage as the program is in the BIOS. Extremely cool. I was worried that Dell might not have added this feature as not all manufacturers do but I was relieved to find that they do.

    Absolute Software | BIOS Compatibility

Even if the BIOS is reflashed it doesn't matter, the technology, dubbed PERSISTENCE, re-creates itself.

Might be worth checking out, added peace of mind.

Lo-jack seems great but relying on (my) local police force would most likely be a miss even if they were told where is the laptop ...

lol in CA with all the budget cuts going on I highly doubt they would go looking for a laptop.. they would have to cover it for up to 5000.00 for it to go any where.. that way it would be a felony.. then maybe they would go after it!

does this work with the R1? i might b interested in this if it does.. cuzz im kinda paranoid when it comes to my lappy!

Look for computrace in your bios. If it is there then you have it. Just needs to be enabled by paying the subscription.

Yes, it is compatible with the M18x (R1, R2), M17x (R1, R2, R3, R4) and XPS laptops for the past four years or more, and probably a whole lot more models than this short list. I am approaching the end of my 4-year Lo-Jack service with full replacement cost coverage. I'm not sure they even offer than any more. It can also be disabled by the account owner and transferred to a replacement system online without any live interaction with Computrace. I have transferred it several times to different laptops.

Wow, I've been on this board for a bit and its the first I have heard of LoJack, I'm glad a few fellow owners are aware of it and give it some praise. I am still surprised as to how the feature is activated in the BIOS as upon purchase I just downloaded a program and activated it through the OS. Fingers crossed that it is actually in the BIOS!

LE cutbacks not-withstanding, I think this is a great thing to have, especially considering the price for 4 years and the $1k recovery guarantee.

Actually, maybe the LE budgetary woes is actually an opportunity in disguise and cyber bounty hunter squads will emerge from the private sector to retrieve stolen high dollar hardware, for a fee.

Hmmmm.....Anyone interested? What would we need to track one of these things?
