crossfire 6990m or sli gtx 580m

    just want everyones honest opinion.

no fanboyism necessarily needed. just want to know whats best performance from the price.

from what i understand the 6990m in crossfire is plenty powerfull might just need some drivers/profiles and stuff like that. i.e. a little more work to get them running smooth. not that big a problem. also 700$ cheaper than sli which gives me room for ram hardrive and cpu upgrades.

but i'm worried the 580m sli will be faster or better as it's my understanding some games are "nvidia" games. stupid expensive!!!

but i also hear alot of people say radeon's for mobile and nvidia's for desktop idk.

also does it have switchable graphics, in other words is battery life anywhere near the m17x r3 which is five hours with the discrete graphics off.

might be noob questions i'm just under the gun to order a laptop today and just want to get some feedback.

    i'm also considering getting a m17x r3 with a 580m.

FYI i don't really play stuff on ultra with vsync and AA on, usually just high but i want to be able to play smoothly. also want to be able to rock BF3 soon.

so what do you guys recommend???? i honestly can't decide just hoping you all can provide more information on specifics so i can make a decision.

Price for Performance there is NO question, its the 6990.

Some people prefer Nvidia (aka fanboism) and usually site out of date stereotypes, ie: Poor drivers etc...

The reality is that the 6990s are awesome, they are rock steady and OverClock very very well. The driver updates are frequent and seem to keep on improving performance.

yeah i have poured all over that site, the 6990cf werent there as of two days ago, and not much info is there.

how is the battery life on the unit compared to the m17x.

and not that i am uncomfortable with tweaking stuff, i would like it to pretty much work outa the box. is it a pain in the getting the 6990's working?

m18x can last 4-5hour for normal use (medium brightness) , like web browser with HD3000.

    Watch DvD / Blu-Ray last 3hour , (around 2 Movies) with HD3000.

I believe nobody gaming with HD3000. If you gaming with 6990 Last only 30min , 45min.

Compare to m17x-R2's stealth mode , m17x-R2 is tooo "SLOW" in battery mode.

I also have just a quick question I need answered, and I really don't want any personal opinion in this. Which is better, Coke or Pepsi? Oh, and which political party should I support? Actually, if you could also tell me what is the one true faith? Just quickly please. Chop chop.

crossfire 6990m or sli gtx 580m

Either would be a fine choice.

    just want everyone's honest opinion.

Welcome to fairly honest Daves used cars.

no fanboyism necessarily needed. just want to know whats best performance from the price.

Performance for the price would be 6990M

from what i understand the 6990m in crossfire is plenty powerfull might just need some drivers/profiles and stuff like that. i.e. a little more work to get them running smooth. not that big a problem. also 700$ cheaper than sli which gives me room for ram hardrive and cpu upgrades.

6990's work great right out of the box with AW drivers. Both cards need driver updates as time goes by. But hard to close your wallet with $700.00 extra bucks in it so spend that on upgrades.

but i'm worried the 580m sli will be faster or better as it's my understanding some games are "nvidia" games. stupid expensive!!!

Don't look like you will have to worry about that.

but i also hear alot of people say radeon's for mobile and nvidia's for desktop idk.

    K

also does it have switchable graphics, in other words is battery life anywhere near the m17x r3 which is five hours with the discrete graphics off.

Yes the 6990's will switch on the fly and the 580m's require a reboot to switch. Correct me if I'm wrong.

might be noob questions i'm just under the gun to order a laptop today and just want to get some feedback.

There is a lot of information on this site but you may need more then a few hours to sift through it.

    i'm also considering getting a m17x r3 with a 580m.

    Less powerful but more portable.

FYI i don't really play stuff on ultra with vsync and AA on, usually just high but i want to be able to play smoothly. also want to be able to rock BF3 soon.

BF3 and future games? Twin cards are more future proof.

so what do you guys recommend???? i honestly can't decide just hoping you all can provide more information on specifics so i can make a decision.

Well I had the same problem while back. I wanted the Ford GT 40 and my wife wanted the Ford Escape Hybrid. That was one of those times when a compromise was not going to happen.... So we got both.

So will that be CASH or Check?

no, 6990m does not switch on the fly. neither does nvidia. all gpu solutions in m18x require a reboot when switching.

I can definitely confirm you still need a reboot with 580m's but I really did NOT believe the 6990 fly switch but wasn't sure of course cause i never owned a set.

    1. Price per Performance - 6990

    2. Performance relative to each other: Not enough data yet, but it appears neither is going to completely blow the other away which makes item 1 above more powerful.

    3. If you don't play at max settings, you could easily get away with an m17x R3. It should even last you quite a while. There are potential benefits to both machines.

in terms of raw power the 6990m has a tad more than the 580m. overclocking potential we do not know which card might come out on top. but nvidia has much better driver support so the speed advantage of the 6990m might be negated by this.

i would have gone with nvidia if it were not insanely overpriced due to the driver support.

Nvidia hasnt even officially released drivers for the 580M, I'm looking forward to see how much better they will perform.

In terms of size the desktop cards are roughly the same ginormous beasts. I would expect the compact cards to be of equal size as well.

Cards themselves are the same size since they both need to fit into the same compact space.
Nvidia cards typically have ram on both sides of the pcb while ATI typically have ram on only one side (thus slightly different heatsink/bracket configurations) but the actual cards themselves are the same size.

According to that link, the 6990M SLI is more powerful than a single Geforce GTX 580

Now I feel better about switching from my Desktop PC with 2x GTX 460s in SLI (-25% or so compared to a GTX 580, I believe) :D
