Well, since third gen (Ivy bridge) graphics don't support the official intel solution to overclocking and I can't use PEG mode (Optimus only). I went ahead and had my friend help me flash my EDID in Linux. My laptop now has 85hz available everywhere.

I used CRU to add the resolutions, then exported the EDID and flashed it in Linux using edid-rw. My friend is lazy and won't make a tutorial sorry.

    basic steps:

Open CRU in windows, add the resolutions/refresh rates desired (I started with 75, 80, 85, and tested each).

    Export EDID from CRU

Launch Linux and use the edid-rw tool to flash the new EDID (use the help command to check what the command is to flash).

Reboot and hope it didn't brick. TO be fair we flashed my EDID like four-five times and it's fine. Now I can run 75, 80, 85hz in games too. So smooth.

But can't you use CRU to set a custom HZ anyways, or no because of the iGPU? And isn't it available for Linux? Oh well this is a nice guide anyways

CRU only supports Intel 4th gen(Haswell) and newer. The drivers for 3rd gen(Ivy bridge) and older don't support any mods done by CRU or INF mods. So a flash is required to get around that.

Also this is nice because the panel is natively at 85hz now

Yup! no issues in any game selecting the resolution/refresh rate! It is risky though if you do something wrong, you'll have a bricked display lol

Don't you have PEG available on your M18x? Which GPUs is it running?

I've been looking at M17xR4s actually recently lol

    No edp on m18x.

I can sell you my R4 with 120hz 3D panel.

I meant what GPU(s) are you running right now? This mod is only useful if you have 1060/1070/1080 installed that requires Optimus.

Did you give up on the M17x? lol

Can’t you still overclock the panel if I run a WX 7100?

    Well , I have 2 AW 17 R1 and a M17x R4 , I really love the m18x though lol ... I need to get rid of them again....

I'd buy a R1 for the right price, barebones and 120hz if possible, but need to scrape together some cash

Yes this will overclock the panel and any GPU will support the refresh rates. You just have to be careful because there's no "test" you just flash it right away. The good thing is, you can keep 60hz default and just add the others. That way you can try. Up to 4 refresh rates are supported at a time. (I did 60hz , 75hz, 80hz, 85hz). It worked up to 80hz, 85hz didn;t work well. We tightened the timings and 85hz works too now though.

Send me specs and pics of the M17xR4 and price, I'll think about it lol

Since you have 4th gen i7 you should be able to overclock using the Intel utility. I believe CRU should work too. Check out this thread:

The way I did mine was flashing the EDID of my display.
