I need help guys. I already hate my 780Ms as is...but now they are running hot! Doesn't matter if I use CLU or diamond paste, it is always in the mid to upper 70s range, even with an undervolt!! What am i doing wrong here???

Aside: If anybody has clevo 8970Ms I would happily trade my 780Ms for them. really.

When is the last time you got fresh thermal pads on there? I had issues with my 680m's recently from the pads actually got old enough that they weren't doing anything and I swapped em out and life has been grand.

I just put fresh ones on there. I don't know why I had 1mm at first but it was too short, no contact. I made 2mm, good contact, but core temps are up. Can somebody please make a proper diagram for thermal pad placement and thickness. I've seen 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm...I really don't know which is right.

To be honest there is no hard and fast rule for the thickness of thermal pads some pads are squishy while others are hard.
So long as the pads have contact and your TIM is spreading properly meaning the GPU die has good contact with the heatsink there is not much else you can do.

I'd be trying a softer 2mm pad or a similar 1.5mm pad. If that is still no good and your fans are working properly, your heatsink may be worn/wearing out...

what's wrong with mid 70's? Unless you mean when not gaming I see no issue at all.

I don't know, with my 7970Ms, I noticed my temps NEVER, EVER went about 70. EVER, even with furmark, at a voltage of 1.050V. I don't know what the deal with these 780Ms, I run them undervolted and still get "hot" which for me is anything above 70, since that when stage 3 fans kick in (max)

Also I noticed...on te back of the 780M...are those VRMs? Wtf nvidia? Why AMD manages to get the same size with VRMs on the top of the card only, and nvidia needs top and back for the same size?? weird...

I think if more people comment you will find out that mid to upper 70's for the 780m's is actually pretty good. As long as that is during gameplay and not simply when you are just staring at your desktop. That would be an issue.

I think you are good to go. Anything under 80c under load is pretty good. It's not uncommon to see some cards run in the low to mid 80's under load so it looks like you are in good shape. Hopefully someone else can chime in to reassure you but sounds good to me. I'm surprised to hear you don't like the 780's. Most people on here that had them loved them and some people are still sticking with them.

I get around 72-74C (before when It was winter the temps avg around 68-70C) if running for a long time on AAA titles like BlackOps3 maxed out & with ReShade / SweetFX now in higher ambient temps over winter the temps maxed at 78C too , So far I have given break to gaming, only play that for time being FPS addiction apart from the Dota2 which needs daily dose (55-60C depending on Ambient temps as usual), Oh, the place is CA btw.

Will have to clean fans and vents now, have to buy that Hurricane can...

I think the temps are fine...I don't know much but I guess that's what the kepler cards are at, plus most of the people like papusan, mr. fox & others use NotepalU3 with 120mm fans which help them run way more cooler and with AC ON.

I thought you had sub 70C temps under load with the 780m and now you are experiencing higher temps...

If your comparing temps with the 7970m you will be disappointed. My experience with the 7970m overvolted and overclocked is similar to yours, I could not get them to draw much more then 100W of power each while the 780m I understand will draw more power at stock and especially overclocked so the higher temps make sense and are unavoidable.

Ok, so this is what it's going to be huh. I might as well stop wasting thermal paste then. I thought I was doing something wrong here.

Dearly beloved 7970Ms how I miss you...no throttling BS and ran cooler

Keeping the fans at 3700 RPM via Hwinfo64 fan control + IC Diamond and my temps seldom exceed 67-69C with sustained load between 70-99%. If the load stays up around 90%+ then the temps will get up to 73-75C (typically peaks). If I disable SLI, which I need to do for some games (Planetside 2) then primary does get up to 80C, sustained, which I am not comfortable with so I usually leave SLI enabled and just deal with the poor performance.

Oh and elevating the laptop a good 1.5-2" does bring the temps down 5-10C.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-ultimate-cooling-mod-to-end-all-cooling-mods.586490/

Oh and I'm at 1.025V, modified vbios and +250 core / +400 memory.

Repaste, manual fan control 3700 RPM and elevate you shouldn't see temps greater than 65-70C.

    Edit:

Correction! I'm actually at 1.050 on the cards.
