Hey guys, sorry for asking what has probably been asked dozens of times already(I tried googling and couldn't find a good step by step) but I am not quite sure how to flash the vbios on my new alienware 18 with 780m's. I know I need nvflash and the unlocked 780m vbios posted by slv7 but that's pretty much it. Basically, if someone wouldn't mind doing a really short step by step that would be awesome, I got this brand new tonight and I don't want the first thing I do with it to brick it. Thanks in advance guys!

Maybe is not registered and he cannot download the VBIOS before the notorious 5 meaningful posts.

@Pandasplooge: check your PM, I sent you a direct link to the flashing utility and a step by step guide.

watch ou, flashing the slv7 bios make your card really hot in game like bf4 , and for me it made it crash all the time after 15 min.... ad to underclock it 100mhz to get it stable... then i flash back original bios .. lost 10fps BUT i can play for hours .. ( just played 5 hours of battlefield 4 )

i think its because the fan are not going fast enough and we can't control them :(

Yes, this screwed up fantable isn't making things any easier for us. However, there are ways to ease up the load, such as keeping room temperature below 70F, use a laptop cooler, and tinkering enough with clocks and voltages until you find a sweet spot of performance/temperature balance. After days and days or attempts I can play BF4 with CPU at 4.2Ghz and GPUs at 950mhz +400mhz memory OC without experiencing issues. Temps get hot indeed, but not to a point that the notebook gets unstable. I keep ambient temp around 65/68C and use laptop cooler.

    Wooah, 65C, that's sauna. :D

Are you going to run some 3DMark11 benchmark? I look forward to see someone other than Mr. Fox hit P15k.

Ooops! I meant 65/58F lol, damn typos :D

I don't chase numbers, never really been fond of it. I did some back then with M18x and dual 6990 and got a 2nd or 3d place ever if I'm not mistaken, but soon realized my heart wasn't in it. I don't like racing in general, and I learned that I felt the same about benchmarking.

It's definitely not for everyone. Some folks just don't like it that much. Some folks that do like it are not blessed with the über-nice (i.e. powerful) hardware that you have.

I'm usually not in 1st place... generally standing in another person's shadow. That applies to all areas of life, not just benching. That the thing about competition. There is always only one person in first place... only one fastest, one strongest. I like benching as a personal challenge, but I don't have a competitive nature when it comes to trying to beat someone else, or maintain a lead, etc. I get excited and happy when I see other people getting results like mine. If I was able to help them achieve the results, it's even more exciting, so that's definitely not a competitive nature, LOL. I like to just have fun and see how far I can push it. It's probably obvious to some folks that have been here a while, but I actually enjoy it as much or more that gaming and I [mis]use games as a means of benching. I like being a "Hardware Master" so to speak, having dominion over the machine rather than people.

When I first got my Alienware I'd put my benchmark programs in my App's folder. Fast forward to today, they are all in my games folder :D
I like setting personal goals eg. 13,000 3D mark 11 points while under a certain temp or voltage. It's addictive, but it's also satisfying and nice to know your machine is properly tuned.

Because I like to have that buttersmooth experience that a (well-optimized) game that's very resource-eating can deny me. For example, Crysis 3, the Metro series, etc. When I overclock I can see the difference, and not just in that little green number in the left corner of the screen, but in the visual experience in itself, while maintaining highest settings. If didn't overclock the CPU I could forget the smoothness I see in Crysis 3 during the busiest scenes with enemies, explosions etc. Between turning some settings down and overclocking to obtain a smoother visual experience, I prefer the latter.

Very well put, brother Fox. And I hope the several benchmarkers here don't get me wrong. I totally appreciate and value the hard work needed to achieve such results. The score is not even the point I'd say, considering the knowledge you gain in the process of chasing that record. I totally see why chasing numbers can be so exciting and motivating. Not to mention that it's thanks to benchmarkers who usually are pioneers of overclock and crafters of awesome mods that commonly performing hardware in their hands become amazingly performing one, for everyone's benefit.

I am very much like you, brother Fox. I don't have a competitive nature if I'm not put there by external circumstances--Italian blood makes it hard to refuse a challenge :D Another reason I don't enjoy much the multiplayer side of games, but I have much fun with the campaigns.

    @Rafix

    Greetings,

I am glad i came across this thread.
Ive been having problems with my new alienware 18 780m sli in the sense that they declock for no valid reason, not temp related, no reason at al.
I began doing some research and came came to the conclusion that an unlocked vbios is the answer.
It seems there is only one place i can download that from, namely tech Inferno, which has the 5 posts steps in place.
I cant even seem te reach that stage as i dont seem to get my confirmation email.
I don't know how the situation is with the donation stuff because i cant even get access to that with an unconfirmed account.
I'm really anctious to tweak these gpus so they can finally reach their full potential.
Would you be so kind as to link me the vbios for the 780m from tech inferno please?
I don't mean to be dis respective to the creator of the vbios in any way, it is just a hassle which can take a lot of time to get confirmed and everything else.

A very big thanks in advance,
    Kind regards,
    thegremlin599

    Hello @thegremlin599

I am afraid I cannot be much of assistance with your problem. While I don't own an Alienware 18 anymore, and I haven't be active on T|I in a while, I am still a member of their forum and wouldn't want to break their rules, which forbid members to do exactly what you asked:

I think you should still try to earn the rights to access and download T|I resources by contributing with at least 5 quality posts. Since you are having problems with your activation, you should consider contacting T|I staff and ask them to help you with it. You can do it easily through their contact form: http://forum.techinferno.com/sendmessage.php

Select Registration Problem and let them know that you are having troubles with your account. I am sure they will be happy to help you ;)

By the way, in the meantime, you could try locking the clocks using EVGA Precision X K-boost. This feature should also work with stock vbios, although I don't recall if it also prevents the GPUs from throttling under load without a custom vbios. It's worth giving it a try while you wait for the T|I guys to help you with the activation. Disable SLI, reboot, enable K-boost, reboot again and should be good.

    Greetings @Rafix

Im sorry to bother you again.
Im was looking into the precision x K-boost thing but it seems when i click the k-boost option it lights up for a fraction of a second and then goes off again.
So that option is out of the question.
Also, even using nvidia inspector i cant get a stable clock on these gpus.
I already sent an email concerning the problem with registration but no reply as of yet.
As I said, i would be happy to donate a few dollars to be able to download this for the time and effort the creator put into it but i cant even do that.
Maybe im a bit inpatient but its just frustrating to see you're not getting 60fps and the reason why is that your gpu is only running at half speed for no reason.
Anyway, hopefully ill be able to get the file some time in the near future.
Do you have any other ideas maybe on how to get an unlocked vbios? or methods that can fix my clocks?

Again, thank you for your time, I very much appreciate it.
    Kind regards,
    thegremlin599

If i remember correctly, the 780M SLI used to throttle quite a bit by design, which was the reason many, including myself, flashed them with slv7 vbios.
This needs further investigation. Did you follow the steps I suggested above: disable SLI, reboote, enable K-boost, re-enable SLI, reboot? Are you using other apps such as MSI Afterburner together with Precision X? It's better using only one at a time. Also, before you enable K-boost, make sure you don't try to overclock the GPUs (it won't work without unlocked vbios anyways).
I suggest you to send another message, in which you mention you'd like to contribute to their community with a donation.

    @Rafix

Yes i noticed that. In a lot of games it just throttles for no good reason.
I doesn't run at full speed on full load while the temperature is at 60 - 70 Celsius.
So in theory this shouldn't happen but it does sadly enough.
when I observe the clocks, temps and load i get the sense that they are enormously unstable, and when i see the cards not using their potential im just getting this achy feeling in my stomach that i cant do anything about.

I followed the exact steps and even with disabled sli the k-boost problem still occurs.
So i guess that route is out of the question.

I just sent an email with my intention to contribute to them but still have to receive any contact from them at all.
Still no confirmation email, no reply to my contact, nothing sadly enough.

I want to stress that I am enormously thankful for your help and effort.
    With kinds regards,
    Thegremlin599

Maybe something happened during your registration and your account is botched? Why don't you register again, using a different email, and then try using the donation/payments link again.

Make sure the confirmation email isn't landing in your spambox.

The thing is, I already registered a second email after i saw the first one didnt get anything. I can try a third but i dont know if that will help that much. Its not in the spam folder either, that was the fist thing i checked. I am becoming agitated by TI and i really dont know whatbis left to do.
