ok So there was a thread awhile back and people were asking about different skins.. and such and i went ahead and bit the bullet and decided
to be the test subject with this company every one was talking about but had no experience with...

So I bought a skin.. and I got to say shipping was really quick..

Then I tried to install it.. made sure i watch there instructional video first..(just to be sure) and tried my damndest to line the damn thing up... no go, big 10-4 negative.. just wouldn't line up..

Well I tried and tried.. repositioning thinking maybe over here a bit.. but no mater what I did there was always a section not aligned..

I emailed the company today and am awaiting a response.. there return policy is less than agreeable.. they want a 20% restocking fee.. and they wont return any thing thats been peeled off of the plastic sheet it comes on..
(there's 2 .. 1 that hols every thing together while you apply it and 1 that it comes on..)

But in there return policy they dont mention any thing about defective items like mine that are misaligned..

Now the QUALITY is A+ nice detail.. not super thick... but i did notice that some of the covers for things like that touch pad and the mouse buttons were not the right size..( but I didnt plan on using those any ways)

every thing else seemed to look like it was going to line up..

So as much as i want to make this work I am going to wait to see if they will send me a replacement.. If i don't here back from them by Monday ill put it back on and take pictures showing the misalignment..

geez I was hoping this would be a direct fit with no issues... I was all excited.. now im just a little disappointed and kinda bummed lol.. $51.50 bucks down the tube as of right now..guess i should of know by what the total came out to.. it was telling me i was crazy... But we shall see hopefully they make it right and if they do Ill endorse there company and show off what i bought on my laptop.. but until then..

well this is the one I picked and to give you an idea i highlighted where it is misaligned..

Brother D I bought a skin from the same place and mine didn't fit perfectly either. There was like a 1/4 inch on the top and bottom where you could see the lid. I took it off and threw it in the garbage.Live and learn.

If it's too difficult to make it a precise fit, it would be better if they did not try to sell it that way and left an equal amount of chassis evenly exposed around the perimeter and showed it that way in their photos. Skins for the XBOX 360 and PS3 are nice, but most of them I have seen leave parts of the chassis tastefully exposed by design. The same concept could be applied here. Then people would have a different expectation of look and fit. I thought about getting a skin several times before my repaint and my skepticism about how it might fit always ended up preventing me from taking the risk on buying one. It's a great idea, but it's too bad the attention to detail regarding fit is lacking.

If I were going to apply one, I think I would put it only on the metal lid and chassis base and throw away the applique for the LCD, palm rest and touch pad. Covering all of it is not even a good look in my opinion... too busy to be tasteful with that much surface covered. The black palm rest is a complimentary accent with any color or design. I also cannot imagine it would ever fit well and the front of the palm rest where in turns downward between the speakers. It's tough to get a good fit with any kind of decal or applique on surfaces with contours going multiple directions because it has to be longer and shorter in certain areas to be an precision fit without wrinkles or blemishes.

The website doesn't have a product category for the M18X R2.. Maybe the lack of fit came from slight changes in dimensions between the two revisions?

The web site I was just at had one for the M18x. Here is a link to it: M18X - Decalrus_Ultimate skinz

I am not aware of any slight change in dimensions between the M18x R1 and R2. What are you referring to? All of the chassis parts are interchangeable. The only differences are internal, and even some of those parts will swap out perfectly between the two models. The only difference I have seen with the chassis is a larger opening in the bottom between the hinges to accommodate the mSATA.

Looks like my conjecture fails to hold water  It's quite surprising that Decalrus has such a huge collection of M18x skins and yet cannot provide a good fit

It's probably not an easy task to make a decal fit to close tolerances and look perfect. I would not say impossible, but do think "unlikely" is not too far off base. And, considering that most of us M18x owners tend to be OCD and demand nearly flawless product quality, we would be a tough customer group to please. I know myself well enough that I ended up not buying one because I knew that if I could find anything that was off a little bit that I would be extremely dissatisfied and toss it in the garbage like Brother Harlon did.

I have a minor scuff mark on my yellow paint job in an inconspicuous spot and it's driving me nuts. It's too deep to polish out. Most people would not even notice it unless I were to point it out, and I'm seriously considering putting all of my parts back into my blemish-free original black chassis because of it, LOL. So, yeah, if the skin was uneven, crooked, wrinkled, or inconsistent with fit anywhere it would be installed a day or less before it got torn off and discarded.

Some of these skins look amazing!

Amazon.com: Decalrus Matte Protective Decal Skin Skins Sticker (Matte Finish) for Alienware M18X case cover Mat_M18X-26: Computers & Accessories

If they do not stand behind their product and either issue a refund or a skin that fits properly I would author a review on amazon.com to warn other prospective M18x owners of the issue.

I hope you get a decal that fits, if you do I might even try on of these, even though I love the radiance of Nebula Red.

BTW, there is no 10-4 negative in police radio parlance, 10-4 is always a code for affirmative.

I was interested in those skin when I got mine but never pulled the trigger because I was concerned with how it would fit,
I hope they make it right by you, I might get one myself if you get a replacement that fits well.

actually 10-4 = "message received" but is often confused with affirmative

haha exactly! its me saying negitive in brother john way lol

also.. in the video for the m18x it shows a perfect fit.. no misalignment at all.. so in theory these should fit as well as there video shows..

regardless of what it means.. when some one says 10-4 after some one says some thing it usually is interpreted as "yea i understood you" or at least to us lame men that what it means..

if you do that i want to be first in line for you awesome paint job parts lol..

Appreciate the nice comments DumbDumb and trooper. If the chassis comes apart, I most likely would have the old parts blasted with plastic bead or sodium bicarbonate to strip the old finish and repaint them a second time. The thought even occurred to me that it might be cool having a bare aluminum finish that I have polished to look like a Cylon-armored alien beast. Might look awesome with the black trim and red AlienFX. Even though it is cool, I sometimes wish the lid was a solid panel without the alien head logo. It kind of gets in the way of customization.

All right its been a week since i contacted the company and i have to say now that this is not a company i would endorse..

pic of decal applied to my system to follow.

picture as promised.. now after really trying and messing with it.. im happy with the results as one can be.. But... it still does not line up all the way...
i had to really play with it to get it to this point.. figure ill use it until it gives out on me or peels off.. some parts dont stick very well..

Thanks and every one.. it does look descent but.. it isnt right.. and i need to stress that i had to put alot of work into this to get it to look like that and it an illusion..lol..
in person you see all the flaws... camera doesn't really pick them up...

id be happy with it if it was right and didn't take so much messing with to get it semi right.

So, what I'm thinking then is this would be a 2 step process...

    1) Buy cool skin for my m18x

    2) Fly DumbDumb in to install the skin for me! :p

Seriously, though I understand what you're saying about the work involved and the flaws, it looks good in the pictures - hope it works for you! (I know myself - I don't have enough patience to do this anywhere near what you've done, so mine would have way more flaws; so this is probably a REALLY bad idea forme to try!)
