i have had my Alienware M18xR2 for a near trouble-free 4 years. i have always used an ethernet connection for all that time until; today when I needed to use the inbuilt wi-fi.

Didn't matter what I tried I couldn't turn wi-fi in the Network and Sharing Center. Aeroplane mode was off but the option to turn WiFi on/off was greyed out.

Device Manager shows this device is working properly.

    Using Windows 8.1 pro x64.

    Any suggestions please?

What Wifi card is in your R2 ?
Have you made sure it is fully connected properly (made that mistake myself)
I have found that device manager isn't useful to tell if something is working or not, and with windows 8.1 its even worse. When I used 8.1 some of the drivers were just crap, if 8.1 drivers failed then I had to use the windows 7 drivers instead.

You could try a different driver and see if that helps. I moved back to windows 7 as all drivers work 100% as do Windows 10.

The WiFi card is a Killer. No idea if it's properly connected. I assumed it was as I've never touched it.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
