Around a week ago i tried overclocking my alienware 18's i7 4800mq through intel xtu. In game temperatures were around 96C and i don't want to drastically reduce my cpu's lifespan. So, as i couldn't remember all the default cpu setting on intel xtu (for my 17 4800mq obviously) i selected the default profile, from the "profiles" page, and applied those default cpu settings. The problem is that now I'm still getting really high temps and games like far cry 3 which ran smoothly on max settings before, are now running around 20 fps which is weird compared to how my aw18 performed with default settings before overclocking (consider that apart from my i7 4800mq my other specs are: 16 gb ram @1600mhz and dual gtx 780m in sli). So i tried cleaning the fans and heatsink as well as reapplying thermal paste but I'm still getting the same performance issues. I was thinking that maybe the default xtu profile isn't the same as the settings i actually had as default and is what's causing issues. I attached, as you can see, screenshots with my xtu settings. To what should i change which values, if i should change any to get actual default/efficient settings for my i7 4800mq. Also another thing i noticed is that idle temps are around 55C....is this safe/ok?). Thank you! [IMG] [IMG]

Save defaults in the bios and if that does not work do an EC reset. Otherwise it's your CPU needing a repaste or a heatsink issue.

From my experience from dealing with XTU, only a format would fix that and load BIOS defaults before formatting.

My 4940MX used to idle @ 75C with the stock paste @ 4GHZ now it idles @ 48C @ 4GHz using Liquid Ultra. I suggest you buy liquid ultra FTW

You say you have applied new thermal grease; Which thermal grease did you use, and how did you applied this paste? You should use minimum Gelid extreme or IC7 thermal grease. Apply thermal grease with the "thin line" on processor die and not use more thermal grease than a grain of rice. Afterwards you just have to fitted the heatsink without rubbing out the thermal grease on the die. If you do not plan to overclock, you don't need to use Liquid Ultra (but this paste is still the best).
55C tells me nothing... Idle temperature is determined by the ambient temperature where you use your pc. Have you warm at home, the processor temperature is higher and vice versa.
Start with uninstall any Xtu profiles you have in Xtu. Select default profile in xtu and reboot the laptop. When PC is restarted uninstall Xtu. Reboot your PC and go into bios and reset the bios to default and shut off the pc. Start up the PC again and go into the bios and take a picture of advanced settings. Post image in the thread and someone tells what settings you need.
