Hello everyone, I have recently been planning to buy an Alienware 18, the only problem is Dell killed it off and if there is a successor it WILL be BGA, Dell will never put in a LGA socket on a laptop unfortunately :(. One thing I'm worried about is that newer laptop cards such as the 980 and Pascal mobile cards won't be supported by the AW18. So like before with the 980m, I'll be stuck with crappy UEFI and Windows 8/10 as well as HWINFO, which isn't that bad, except for the UFEI part its terrible. I am considering a Clevo but one problem is it doesn't have HDMI IN which is one reason I want the AW18, maybe even the M18xR2. I am slightly also considering the GT80-S but the skylake BGA bothers me since it doesn't OC well. So in the end, what should I buy? Should I go for the AW18 or wait for other options such as the Clevo or GT80-S?

alienware 18 works with 980M in legacy. The Alienware brand is officially dead with the disappearance of the Alienware 18.

However i think you better off buying a Clevo P870DM.

depends on the price , if you see one for around 1500-2000 bucks with decent specs yes but beyond that there are far better options like the gt80 or the above mentioned p870dm

Edit: gt80 haswell revision that is , newer revisions unfortunately suffer from bga cpus

What Alienware? There is no more Alienware it's called BGA garbage Dellienware.

Get a Clevo P870DM-G with a desktop 6700K / desktop GTX 980 / Gsync screen in a laptop that is fully upgradeable in the future.

I have a M18x-R2. If you buy one only for the HDMI-IN, don't do it. It simply doesn't work with newer videocard drivers...

    No.

Pascal is RIGHT around the corner and promises to be 100% faster at least. All of the current kick-butt DTR's such as MSI GT-80 etc. will probably receive serious upgrades in their successors aside from Pascal treatment, notably G-Sync displays.

Do not purchase anything right now.

Imagine GTX 980 Ti / 980M SLI performance on one card with only one 330W PSU required.

What do you mean by newer video cards? It still works with M18xR1 and 880M SLI

I know. I posted that the 780M + M18xR1 and M18x R2 works just fine with HDMI in, even though the stock cards were 6990M and 7970M respectively.

Well that's all about what do you mean by "newer"? 880M is 2014 year GPU so it's one generation before maxwell. It's fairly new GPU for me.

not so fast there young sapling; simply buying an 18 doesn't give us a resolution to the still open qwestion: is an 'Alien18 worth buying as of 2016'? Seems to me you have to help see us through to the end here; we'll need a review of your 18 > inspect the product after delivery > appraise the condition > give us the specs > performance-to-dollar > run some benchmarks perhaps > give that Alien the what-for > then, instead of asking the general membership here if it is worth buying, you yourself can help render the verdict. Others here might like to join in with you & render theirs. Sound like a plan Mr Coolie?

Only worth buying if you get the 4940mx and 980M SLI for a slick deal.

I guess the one I just bought isn't worth it then..interesting. I kid.

I have seen that config or close to it anyway from resellers on Ebay either refurbished or returns for 2500-3000. Usually a 4910 or less memory but Still close. I bought my previous 18 that I still have as of now in a similar fashion from a reseller (factory return I believe). 4810, 880m sli and actual runs like a champ. Cards are stable, doesn't run hot, it was in flawless condition and still is. Maybe I got lucky, or maybe there is a benefit to buying that way if indeed they have been returns and possibly fixed. At any rate, could be a roll of the dice buying them like that but they are out there.
