Greatings, I am new to the high performance laptop scene, I've had multiple gaming towers previously which I ran with OCed GPU, however I'm unsure how to proceed for laptops.

I have the new Alienware 18 with the factory OCed i7-4910MQ to 4.5ghz (4.45 shown) with the dual 970M.

    Running 3dmarks I'm scoring around 15600-15750 with gpu temps maxing @ 65deg.

I would like to bring my GPU performance closer to the 980s, while keeping my temps in the low to mid 70s. I do not want to play around with the bios timings, voltages and such, I'm just looking for a mild 10-15% OC.

Has any OC'ed their 970s in this model, if so whats the most recommended OC tool, is it still MSI afterburner for laptops? How much extra power should I give it before starting to bump up core and memory speeds, if any.

    Thank you for any help.

I advise you to download and flash Prema's vBIOS for the Alienware 18 GTX 970M (google Premamod), and monitor your temps. My 980Ms run HOT, i will be repasting them AGAIN soon, and be looking for proper thermal pads.

Really? In a new body 18? Apparently they have fans up the wazoo, I took the IC thermal paste option and I find my 970m's run really cool 62-65deg tops, my desktop gpu's would run upwards of 20degs higher than that. On my previous laptop MSI GT70, my single gpu would also run around 80deg.

Im somewhat unsure I want to flash my bios on a brand new system still on waranty, I'd rather use a windows program for just a mild OC, unless its alot more complicated than that for laptops?

Edit: I see you have an R1, is that the brand new body? (2015)

The body never changed between 2013 and 2015. They just added new GPUs to the old existing system. You will need the custom vBIOS to perform proper software overclocking with nvidiainspector. avoid EVGA Precision X
