We all know of and get static from individuals that can " build the same thing cheaper, faster, better, blah, blah, blah....using parts from the recycle depot, an altoids tin for a case and a keyboard from a calculator.......

I'm at a client and one of his employees is such an individual....now, I can't say anything to this guy, but you know how much this guy is endearing himself to me.....so, when he wanders off to answer a call from his overlord.....I meander out to the car, and bring in 2 more Pelican 1600 cases with lappys...

He returns as usual to let me know how foolish he thinks I am to have an AW.....then sees 2 AWs, and an M1730 on the table with a bunch of cables laid between them..."Whadda ya need 3 laptops for?"......."Son.....Have you never heard of a BEOWULF cluster?"

Hasn't given me any static since..... :D

We've got lots of threads like this in the main Alienware section. Just saying.

Why would you need that much power? Or you doing light hacking/cracking or something?

Most guys I work with seem to like alienware or appreciate it for what it is even though they drive a Mac. Each to their own.

My bad....I didn't even look in the main.....

I'm on the road most of the time, travel both sides of the 49th; I always have a spare lappy with me..(you just know that when you need it the most...it will fail and has)....once I'm totally comfortable with the new M18, the M7700 will be reassigned somewhere at home and the M1730 becomes the spare.

Power?.....mmmm...what I do could be done with a netbook.....but the clients feel better when they see a serious chunk of power/laptop.....makes them feel they are getting their money's worth...same with the Pelican 1600 cases...little bit of overkill, but as one client said to me.." you show up with your gear looking like a professional operation...you have everything with you and you're worth it....you don't come off as a rinky dink guy doing a sideline...."

I work in AV, so I'll never argue against Pelican cases, nor against having spares. Brilliant little clamshells.

We use extra-deep 1490s for laptops+accessories. Love using those things as a basic briefcase too.

I'll always prefer my Sager for business, though. The sleek, label-less laptop that just makes it look so much more serious.

your doing this with only 1 Ethernet and a minilan/wifi card on each system ? Kind of expensive, for if theoretical max Gflops would be like... idk 10ish.... though its an interesting idea.

I guess theoretically the concept would work....way beyond me...I had read about the concept years ago...sounded pretty neat.....but, this guy was really tickin' me off....talked alot...didn't say much....kinda like an infomercial at 3am......

I didn't think that the guy had the knowledge that he claimed to have.........so, on with the show.......best part.....he didn't even realize the cables were just laying between the laptops...not connected

    still haven't heard from him .... :D

What is really amazing is that some of those beggars are actually serious about feeling they should get something for nothing.

Here's a true story. A while back I starting getting messages from some person through my YouTube account. He subscribed and had been watching my videos. He was sending me complimentary messages. One day he asked me if I would donate my beast to him because he was a poor college student and could not afford to buy one. I thought it was a joke and deleted the message. Several days later another message came in, repeating the request... then another. Of course, I was ignoring them. Around the third or fourth message, I finally replied with something like, "I don't think so. I thought you were joking at first, but it seems that you are serious." The dude was furious that I had not taken his requests seriously, and that I wasn't willing to give him the beast. He called me a rich, selfish snob because was not willing to let him have it as a gift, LOL.

Yeah, we are not supposed to go there since this is a tech forum... but, sometimes it is difficult to ignore the obvious folly that seems to surround us and affects us on a daily basis. It's amazing how many people have lost their ability to think rationally any more. Politics aside, common sense seems to be rare in this messed up world we live in. And, as we all know, violent video games are the root cause of all evil in the world, second only to us evil Alienware fanboys that are shooter-game advocates, LOL. (That's tech-related discussion, right?)

But, let's avoid straying into politics any further. Nobody is going to kill you, buddy. ;)

I get similar treatment from irl persons. They see me with my M18x R2 and Sony Xperia Z, and think I'm loaded or something. Once I had a guy who hinted at me that I should pay for dinner (we were 4 people in all), and of course I pretended I didn't hear him... but he had the cheek to say "Oh come on, if you have enough money for all that stuff, surely you can afford to pay a measly 70 euro for us?" He tried to pass it off as a joke but never was I more inclined to put a fork through someone's eyes as on that day.

Naturally I've never met this person ever again after that incident, but I carried a bottle of cyanide with me just in case we met again at some dinner :p (joking haha)

Yeah alot of people these days want everything for nothing..yes including 'Obama phones' if you're from the states :D
Its too often feels the old philosophy of 'no pain, no gain' has become a totally alien idea.
I've also heard the 'I'm a poor Uni student' violin song too - To me that sentence is a complete oxymoron.

TBH, I've only had one negative reaction in the few months I've been an AW owner, and that was yesterday. Wasn't the typical AW hate either, and I'm not entirely sure if I can talk about it without getting political/racial, and it was one of the most mind numbingly stupid experiences I've had in my life. Most people who would comment appreciate it for what it is though. Met a guy with a 17" MSI on campus the other day who was really interested. Said he'd had his for about 9 months, but it had been at a repair depot for almost half of that time, and he was looking at replacing it before the next problems arose, and that he was looking at AW just because of the in home service.

Yup, social constructs have worked non-stop in order to make society a place that promotes alienation, individualism, confrontation, and materialism. No wonder bitterness and jealousy on all levels are so widespread nowadays. Haters gonna hate, no matter what. But as it often happens in human history settings and situations change. So now instead of having alienated people we have Alien-hated owners :-D

Yeah, pretty cheese right? Couldn't help myself, it's Friday...

Here's the short version. I was hanging out at a restaurant off campus on the patio, doing some CS homework while I was waiting for my lunch. As I'm sitting there coding, three wanna be thug Latinos (looked like high school kids) came up and started hassling me for not acting like they thought a Latino should act, at first about how I was in school (I was wearing my UTD Engineering shirt), then how I was coding on a "nerdy white person computer", eventually on to how the way I was dressed was like I hated being a Latino. The insult they were most proud of was that I was a "Mexican Oreo", which honestly had me laughing a bit inside at how juvenile it was.

I normally wouldn't have thought much of it, but this (from my experience at least) seems to be a growing attitude among Latin teens. My cousin's been hassled by a similar group of kids ever since he got into high school because he's into computer science and robotics. It's like they can't comprehend why anyone would want to work with technology and belittle anyone who does. And I guess they're entitled to their opinions, but forcing them on others and discouraging them from doing what they want with their lives is just incredibly mean spirited, and incredibly stupid when it's based on race. It's also ironic when the smart phones they love to use so much were created by the nerds they love to rag on so much.

Yeah... I had to work hard for 2 solid years to get my AW, since I'm a "poor Uni student" as well following the 6-year long Law course. God knows the amount of nights where I had to restrict myself from binge-drinking or other stuff just so as to be able to save up for my jewel... but do you know what? You appreciate things so much more when you work so hard for them. My phone barely has a scratch on it and I baby all my things to the point of idiocy sometimes, and pretty sure that I developed OCD as well haha - it might be too materialistic a behaviour for some, but after all, that's what money is for isn't it? If you work hard for it and can't even enjoy it, then what's the use of it?

I don't know why most "haters" ignore all of the legitimate reasons to dislike AW and make up new ones. Instead of inconsistent customer service, I read about "nonexistent" customer service, and instead of mentioning that the 17 has the CPU cooling of a sabotaged 18, they claim that Alienwares have worse cooling than all competitors. Figures.

The only problem I have with AW is the (limited and sometimes damn overpriced) configuration options when you are building a system (and the fact they don't sell AW 18 in Netherlands).

That's hardly being materialistic. You nurse them because you had to work hard for it. You call it OCD, I call it respect. A few among more affluent people might tend to take all the can buy for granted, that is, they use/abuse something and if it breaks who cares, a new one is coming right up. Money doesn't buy happiness, but it certainly makes life easier, and when you bust your butt off to get it, you learn that nothing should be taken for granted.

For many of us this computer is an investment, and it is where we channel our funds. I seldom hear people criticizing or mocking someone for loving snowboarding or rock-climbing--people who might be channeling most of their fund into that passion, just like we do with our beloved notebook. An AW is something people can see, and we all know that its flare doesn't go unnoticed. Some people are always going to feel bitter about what others have. This is because it puts salts in their wounds, and in their twisted view of reality, it reminds them of their own failure/inability to achieve or obtain the same. Give a maxed out Alienware 18 to any of those haters and I promise you that you'd witness the most magical change of heart ever seen around. If I were rich I'd love to do just that. I'd find the most fierce AW hater around and interview him twice: Before and After Alienware happened in his life.

Complete fail on so many levels. This simply breaks down to jealousy. They see that you have nice things and work hard and simply cannot stand the fact that someone isn't GIVING these things to them. They're too ignorant to understand that ANYONE can make something of themselves if they work hard for it. They've been jaded with a sense of entitlement and unfortunately they will probably never come to realize the truth, that for every person in this crazy world there's a better version of that person just waiting to be unlocked and tapped into, all it takes is the will and dedication to make it happen. The sad truth though is that these bafoons will probably NEVER learn that lesson and instead lock themselves into a life of crime, welfare dependency, and complete failure.

This isn't just something you see from young Latinos, either. Unfortunately, this attitude is an epidemic that's plaguing young people of all races and walks of life. Whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, middle easterns, you name it! This all stems from a complete lack of parental guidance due to the rapid deterioration of FAMILY VALUES. Throw in a touch of shameful excuses for modern day "celebrity role models" and a side of government encouraged independence on entitlements and the recipe for disaster is complete.

I applaud you and your cousin for staying strong and not letting this particular brand of d0uch3bagery bring you down, it sure as hell isn't easy these days. Just remember, those jerk-offs may be hassling you today, but you'll be the only one laughing in the long run. Thanks for sharing.

Yup...Everybody has their passions..not everybody else shares them......for instance.....I cannot fathom strapping a couple of planks to my feet; and then sliding my a$$ over the edge of a cliff...but there are a lot of people that enjoy skiing ....but if that's their thing, then I can respect their passion.... :)

You touched the main point here. Some people think they don't like something until they try it. It's like what we usually reply to the common hater: "if you had a chance to get your hands on one you wouldn't talk like that," and "that's the talk of someone who's never tried one." I know some people loathed the idea of skiing. But when one day they got a chance to try it in a relatively safe environment they got hooked to it.

Yeah I know that. Still doesn't take away the fact that the configurations are fairly limited (and as I said before, a bit overpriced. Oh, and by the way: NO, I am NOT crying about Alienware being too expensive, it's just that sometimes I feel like they ask insane prices for stuff like HDD's and RAM).

You can call and ask them to give you the lowest configuration, and just add the GPU and CPU you want. Them buy HDD and RAM yourself.

Im with you, their SSD prices are kinda expensive, and far from top notch, same with RAM, so thats why Im buying that elsewhere

lol, that's why I mentioned "safe environment" ;)

If you're just given a pair of skis without proper training, the first time you try it's bound to be an experience like... well, like yours :D

I had a similarly frustrating experience with windsurf. They just gave board and sail and told me to go... meh. I had no idea, of course. I wasn't able to move 1 foot, but had a good workout always lifting the sail and jumping on and off the board, for the so many times I lost my balance. It was far from being a hooking experience, but I knew it wasn't about the windsurf itself. I had no guide and no reference; hardly the best way to try something new.

Every time I bring out my m18x r2... People ask me wow how old is that thing? When tell them I've had it less then a year and it's the most powerful notebook you can buy, they seem to be in slight disbelief. "big and bulky" seems to be the notebook of the past. Especially with all the ultra books, tablets, macbooks out there. But none the less I carry her with pride.

The problem is that all of those devices are so pathetic in terms of performance. They represent the lowest common denominator in the computer world and they are accepted by people that are willing to compromise for the sake of convenience. Some of them, especially those that are made really well, are extremely overpriced and you get a poor value in return for your dollar in terms of performance. Many (not all) of the people that are so in love with them have no idea whatsoever what it is like to own a really powerful system and they are oblivious to how pathetic those machines truly are. For them, ignorance is bliss.

Until they can make an ultrabook that is as powerful as a beast like the M18xR1/R2/18 they will be for ordinary people with low performance standards. I have a hard time identifying with people that are willing to make such huge compromises. I can see the rationale for having one as an expensive replacement for a fountain pen and paper tablet, but beyond that not so much... certainly not as my main computer. Of course, the down side to being a performance junky is that makes it far more difficult to be satisfied with ordinary. I know that in some ways being hooked on powerful laptops for so many years has ruined my tolerance for ordinary systems. I tend to be overly critical of them because I have set the bar so high that there is no way they can gain my acceptance. In that regard, I have painted myself into a corner with almost no alternatives available as upgrade path, LOL.
