Since I've had the opportunity to work with both cards, I thought I'd share my findings at STOCK voltage. I really dislike voltage mods, so I try to squeeze what I can out of each card at stock voltage. I've played around with stock voltage + OC on my 7970M with drivers from (july/august) from original 850/1200 up to 970/1350 using a vBIOS mod I made myself and got this result:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10344003
Disregard the CPU score, the GPU scored 15626
Now, I had run 780Ms stock on the Alienware 18 with relatively recent drivers (july/august) and flashed to the SVL7 vBIOS running 950/1300 and got this result:
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10533725
Disregarding the 4930MX being an inferior chip to the 3920XM, the GPU scored 15588
Just thought I'd share those results.
EDIT:
UPDATE
I stuffed the 780Ms into the M18x R2 and realized something very very different... the stock voltage on the 780M is only 1.000V, whereas stock voltage on the 7970M/8970M is 1.050V. Not only was I able to meet and exceed the 7970M overclock score in 3dmark11, but I managed to do it at a wonderful undervolt + overclock combo of -25mV on each card + 100mhz on the core and +200mhz on the memory. Score result here:

780M is a great card, just sad I was a little late to the party.

At stock volts they're very close, good to see the 7970m keep up.
However when volts are involved the 7970m does not scale anywhere near how the 780m does.

That was with a very small OV I think it was 1.050v at most.
Now of course if we go 1.100v like @Mr. Fox did we see that GPU score go up nicely http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7593998
I never was able to go above 1Ghz on my 7970m cards in my old M18x, I also don't think I've seen anyone hit over 1.075Ghz on those cards here either, I could be wrong.
They're still great cards though, especially for compute. -

Wow you have had some really good silicon, I got over 990Mhz on my 7970m's and that was at 1.1v

My R9 M290X's run 1025/1325 stable with stock voltage etc. Not even sure if I can alter the voltage on these cards?? Afterburner has the voltage section greyed out.
-
You need to flash a custom vbios in order to change the voltage, well, that's how it works for the 7970m
-
I can obtain the vBios using GPUz, but am unaware of a program to use to modify it? If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. Sorry to thread hijack btw.

Update to this: Sorry AMD, you don't hold a candle to nGreedia. See updated first post for details. I wish nGreedia has the same compute power as the 7970M, but for games, nvidia is just king, and a way lower voltage no less.
780M vs 7970M Stock voltage + OC
