alright guys. i ordered myself a pair of 100W nvidia coolers for 90$ cad after taxes, so now im thinking either 780m's or 880m's. thats double the vram. theres a 880m for sale locally for 300Cad, but may be able to talk him down to 250CAD. thats lower than a 780m even.

How bad is the throttling on 880m's? is downclocking it to 780m speeds hard? or is this throttling fixed now?

Id love to max out my m18xr1 over time, thats why im curious. :)

I also just picked up a m18 r1 for 350, I know it's old but it's rarely been used. From what I have read in these forums, you need to upgrade the mobo to r2 in order to run anything higher then a 780m.

Thought you needed r2 for 900 series, just the 800 series wasn’t generally worth it for r1 due to throttling from vbios or something.

Also damn, I want another m18x at that price hahahaha

Yeah I couldn't believe it man, first decent pc ive had. Only issue is the temps are shooting up and down on the cpu not sure weather I need to repaste or not.

Repaste couldn’t hurt. I usually past, seat the cooler , screw it down them unscrew it to make sure it’s a good spread and not too much then reseat. (Linus tech did a test and it had no effect on temps to do that)

Tip from me, don’t bend the ribbon cable for hard drives - undo from mono then take out hard drives - too many laptop surgeries and it’ll get worn and not work so you’ll have to get a new one. :)

If the price is right go for the 880M SLI setup.

GTX 980Ms are vastly more powerful, a single 980M overclocked is on par with GTX 880M SLI on an SLI optimized game. I'd suggest you go hunt for 980Ms.

Guys....970M/980M will not work in the M18x R1.....incompatible with that InsydeH2O BIOS, missing appropriate UEFI modules to handle GOP video.

OP, best you can do is GTX 880M x 2 or convert to m18x r2 motherboard and put a 980M in there. 880M is outrageously priced for the performance, my recommendation is GTX 780M SLI

No. Flash size is too small on the M18x R1 to retrofit the necessary modules.

@noob@this, arctic silver 5 should do great :)

@ssj92, is there much a performance difference between the 780m sli and 880m sli?

@ Danishblunt, i wish i could get 980m sli's in my machine, but i cant justify the r2 motherboard upgrade just yet :(

@ Raidriar it would only cost another 100-200 cad for 880m's vs the 780m's, is the difference that small?

And i do have the unlocked bios from techinferno, i wish 980m's worked. or 1060's.

Get whichever is cheaper. 780m vs 880m SLI is basically no difference in games.

At 1080p a pair of either cards should perform very well.

    welp that sucks.

Yeah I think the R2 route would be better then.

    @ColaMonster
I think the R2 + single GTX 980M would be better rather than 880M SLI. Cost are about the same and the GTX 980M will perform equal in SLI optimized games and will stomp in non optimized games.

    R2 board (550 cad) and a 980m (600 cad) = 1050cad , sli 880m's (550~ ea) = 1100 cad, or 780m sli , (385 ea), so 770 cad. hmm.

might end up going for 780m sli, or going with the upgrade to an r2 board. and if i upgraded to an r2 id probably splurge and try getting a 1060 in it. or going 780m sli.

with the r2 are we able to do sli with 1070's? (or 1060's haha)

No, pascal are only able because of the eDP converter. you have to run intel in order to get pascal working. But a GTX 1070 crushes even GTX 980M in SLI.
