I got a reburished system with one 560 . Due to the fact my original system was crossfire Dell has promised me the 580 in sli.

But they will not be in stock untill 08 08 12.
The 6990 crossfire cards will be in stock on monday. Is the 580 card much better than the 6990 . Is it worth the wait or should I just get the 6990.

They are both good cards. No physx on amd though and driver support appears to be better with nvidia judging from what I read here.

OP, as you know, I'd go 580m's all day long....pretty much for the same reasons as mentioned above, as we discussed.

Go for the nVIDIA cards. There really is no point going to AMD multi-card setups until AMD recovers from their horrible mobile GPU support. nVIDIA isn't off the leash either because their 30x.xx drivers are quite flaky (except 301.42).

I agree- Best driver for the 580m's right now is probably 296.10 whql - that's what I am using and its rock solid.

Absolutely worth waiting until Aug 8 for 580M SLI. Be sure the cards are assembled properly. There needs to be a plastic insulator between the back plate and PCB in the corners where the vRAM heat plates are located. Without that the cards will be shorted out and cause all kinds of problems. It is common that they are not assembled correctly and it makes people think something is wrong with the video cards when there is nothing wrong with them.

This is covered in another thread with photos. I'll post a link.

The 6990s have good driver support by now, don't they? I thought the problem is only with the new 7970s because I have been using 6990 for 8 months now and they seem to have good drivers...

Yeah. They run fine. They are so close to performance of 580m SLI though that its an advantage to have PhysX and Cuda and "potentially" better drivers in the future that work....we all know ho well AMD does "driver support" at the moment ;)
