will the 3940xm cpu run cooler at the same clock speed?

From what I remember, ivy bridge ran hotter than any of my sandy bridge chips due to die shrink from 32nm to 22nm

Ivy does run just a tiny bit warmer, but not enough to worry about if you are using Liquid Ultra. It's a fair trade off for the increased performance. You also have a 105°C thermal trip point versus 100°C and less thermal throttling issues with Ivy Bridge (when tuned correctly). Now, the 2920/2960XM are still truly excellent CPUs, but 3920/3940XM are definitely an improvement. In every way measurable, I prefer my 3920XM over my 2920XM.

i would've thought it runs cooler at the same speed considering its 22nm

my 2960xm overheats at 4.5 when gaming i have to stay at 4.4

    Depends on the chip.

Some 2920XM will run cooler than some 3920XM and some 3920XM will run cooler than some 2920XM. No chip is the same.

The temperatures won't be drastically different. I highly recommend repasting with liquid ultra if possible.

well i grabbed a 3940xm off ebay we'll see how it runs, im hoping 4.5ghz@90* or less

in retrospect i almost wish i got the 3920xm instead if a 3940xm really is just an OC'd 3920 =/ significant price difference

Mine definitely holds 4.5ghz at less than 90 degC. I have a 3920XM. 4.3Ghz is usually mid 70s low 80s.

Dude you have an R1 or you have upgraded to R2 mobo? The R1 mobo can't work with 3940... R2 can work with 3940XM and 2960XM..

Yeah the R1 only supports 2nd gen CPUs....3920Xm and 3940XM will not work in the R1 unless you already swapped the motherboard with an R2 model...

    i am actually the owner of (2) R2's and (1) R1 =)

ill put the 3940xm build together with SLI 780's today hopefully if i get to it and report back on temps...the 2960xm is just dying of heat running even at 4.2ghz w/ SLI...its no bueno...before SLI it was cruising just fine at 4.4ghz

identical setup my 3940xm runs about 15C cooler than the 2960xm...we're talking about 80C vs 95C.....wow

crazy stuff! which clocks, ambient temps and stress test are we talking about here?

i remember i could get my 2960xm clock up to 4.7 ghz without any issues, but TDP wise (hardlocked into bios, so had prema help me out in changing the values) and tempwise i maxxed out at 3.3 ghz all cores in prime95, scratching the lower 90s

just for anyone following this the BSOD issues i was having were indeed flexvid and multiplier related

I don't think I've ever had a BSOD in the past 5 years that hasn't been relating to screwing around with multipliers and voltages.

Which CPU heatsinks are in the 2960XM machine and 3940XM machine? The triple pipe R2 extreme heatsink is better than the extreme r1 heatsink.
