    Hello,
I have recently purchased an Alienware m14x. from all the reviews etc I couldn't wait to get my hands on one, however now I have it I wish I never even looked at the damn thing.
With an i7 processor and 6gig of RAM, 1.5g Nvidia graphics card, you think it would at least work..
But mine does not. This excuse for a top end laptop constantly has the fan going full power when cpu usage is on about 10% and when cpu is on about 30-40% the fan is going crazy, That's not all! I though alienware were gaming laptops, able to run games better than that of say, my old 200 odd pound samsung laptop with no orientation towards gaming. Well it doesn't.
This thing keeps constantly freezing, CONSTANTLY! just for about a second it completely freezes and the audio jitters in a way, it's hard to describe. So my alienware m14x is, in a sense, worse than my old laptop. ( a samsung r505 I think ) So if anyone has any solutions to how to solve this, I would be grateful.
    dont suggest the following as ive already doen them;
    -defrag ( even though it's only 4 days old ... )
    -updated drivers for nvidia
-ran antivirus full computer scan and ccleaner multiple times
-plugged into Ethernet cable to check if it was an internet connection based problem.

all in all it is fast, Ill give it that. But it doesn't work. I guess I could summarise it by saying, it's like going to a fancy resteraunt, paying loads to get in but then finding out they serve you turd-based meals.
great way to waste one and a half grand.

Try fresh installing windows 7. Make a factory back up first though.

Call dell tech support. Why complain on the boards? No one can really do anything, but agree with you.

I sometimes regret buying the Aleinware m14x as well. It was IMO produced and shipped so fast that I don't think Dell had time to iron out the flaws. Sure the soft touch finish, heat, weight, bulk, battery life, and fan noise all do suck, BUT when I play a game like crysis 1 and 2, BFBC2, BF3 Beta, and it looks thousands of times better than an xbox 360 at 1080p, I realize it's actually a little more worth it.

Do a fresh install of windows, it should help. The freezing issue is most likely software related than hardware.

Try checking the error logs. Plus you could setup some tracking on hard disk, cpu, processes to see you there a specific bottlenecks when you notice a freeze. Tracking kills performance, but might be useful in the short term for determining the cause. Good luck.

Ive called them they said that the fan may be running so quickly due to the fact it's an i7 and it may not be connected to the motherboard properly, what I want to know is why no one else has this problem. so this cant just be it, there must be something else.

Software, you mean freezing when using skype and googlechrome???
Cant be software. I think the laptop has some in built design flaws honestly, something must be out of place causing havoc inside. but I don't know, I just want the blooming thing to work as it should, smoothly and quickly. so far only one of those two boxes are checked.

Something is obviously wrong, so return it instead of making a thread where we can't help you much.. You seem to be the only person having so many problems, and you just keep saying the computer is flawed instead of just calling Dell and trying to get a replacement first. I can understand if you had like 3 replacements with the same problem, but sometimes defects happen, no company or computer is ever perfect..

I HAVE called dell however I was wondering if your lot could have any siggestions, checked the cpu temperature that was suggested to have slowed it down by the dell lady ( lol ) however all cores are running at 50'c while this browser is open along with skype. I shall be returning it only after I have someone come into to look at it. Ive already done all that Gearsguy, dont worry. Just seeing if you lot had suggestions.

Could be running to hot due to a faulty pasting job, is what came to my mind (Hence constantly throttling down CPU and GPU).
So I'd measure your CPU and GPU temps on idle (e.g. with CPUID HWmonitor).
You should have sth. like 50 to 60 °C on the CPU and 50 on the GPU.

If it's above it then it's a faulty pasting job and you could either repaste it yourself if you tech savy and willing to disemble the laptop yourself or let dell do the job.

    Cheers

Here's what you need to do bud, Call Dell back, be calm. And demand respectfully to speak to a supervisor. Tell him everything. You are having unique issues which should qualify you under warranty for either a full diagnosis and repair job or better yet, a brand new laptop. Let them know you want to sent your sick laptop back ASAP because you are in need of a working laptop. Do not settle for anything less than the option of you sending it back. Make sure you are calling the correct department however, Oddly enough, the support department does not "talk" with the tech department. You know the know saying "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" that sort of thing.

Dell's customer service is rated pretty poorly overall, however the benefits of a large company is that they do replace their products incase of faulty issues, ESPECIALLY if it is on their part.

I know how frustrating it can be.. trust me, especially with something that is so expensive.. but the upside of this situation is you are that much closer to qualify for a brand new laptop.

Remember you are under a warranty (i'm assuming you purchased this thing less than a year ago).

    I hope that helps bud!

    Cheers!

When did you receive your m14x? What drivers are you running? What games are causing it to freeze?

We really need more info here to help you out.

Call Dell for your Laptop replacement since you mention that it is just 4 days old, so I'm sure that the 21-day (varies on country) return warranty still cover.
