Why are these the only GPU choices for the M14x??

    No ATI GPUs for it??

Unfortunately there are no ATI GPUs up for customization. Perhaps they will when the m14x R2 are released.

The 6850m or 6770m would be interesting to see. Is there any others that would be possible to fit into this laptop while not having it burn up?

I think given the size limitations and how the m14x is designed currently, the best they can do is a 555m. Switching it out with a 6850m would cause heat problems.

BTW the 555m is soldered on, and is not a removable card.

true, it does.... which makes me go towards an m17x rather than m14x

But would you rather want to lug around a 17 inch laptop or a 14 inch :p. Unless you are using it as a desktop replacement.

    I am, indeed.

I was about to go the DIY PC way, but I don't have room for a desktop (the furniture) for a PC... so I am considering an M17x... to bad the m18x is out of my budget...
