Hi guys new here ordered a m14x and its en route so to speak, had a couple of questions,

    1. 16gb corsair 1333mhz ram good idea? ie will it work?
    2. replacing the cd drive with secondary hdd and running an ssd on the primary any known issues? ( i have read not to upgrade to a08 or 9 cuz it will throttle the ssd)

and third and finally, Intel Wireless-N 1000 vs killer N card? is there much difference i will be gaming and doing live streams through laptop however mines shipping with the intel wireless n 1000 is it gonna be worth the upgrade to the killer n and also i presume it will void my warrenty if i do?

    thanks in advanced

    Here are my tips:

1- Do NOT fiddle with Dell's build of your computer, the build YOU ordered. I know as a PC user, we all expect to make changes and try to make things better, but so far from what I have read on these forums and many others, almost everyone who have been having problems with their M14x are those who have opened the case and changed things, or even applied a simple overclock. It's a GREAT machine the way it was built. If you can't get what you want in the configuration, buy something else.
    2- See #1
3- I have the wireless N-1000 and it's great. Aside from the range, the Killer is, well, overkill.

    1. The RAM will work although unless you need 16GB for some specific reason you may be further off with 6GB or 8GB as 16GB is way overkill for most people.

    2. In my opinion, when you put an SSD into the m14x you're taking a 50% of running into issues. Looking through this forum you will find tons of information about the SSD issues.

    3. Never had Killer wireless before, but I've read many people saying they prefer the higher end intel wireless NICS.

Pretty much what DC87 said. I hear people have alot of dropout problems with the Intel-1000 card. Too bad they dont offer the 6205 card anymore. Great $30 upgrade

1- I'm sorry but that is just rediculous. I opened my laptop like many others and replaced the dvd drive for a hdd caddy and had 0 issues whatsoever. It only takes some researching to be sure you are doing the right things. As long as you don't physically damage anything, it's all within warranty.

That's a good ram to get. 8gb is more than enough tho. As for memory speeds, it doesn't really matter, 1333 is fine. Though if you can, try for 1600mhz. Doesn't really matter tho, just my opinion. Wont truly see a difference too much.
I heard of people switching the dvd drive for a hdd, Seems pretty straight forward. YOur hdd might not run at full speed, but who cares if you have an ssd.

Don't upgrade ram or most other things through dell (cpu and Gpu excluded) I had the intel wifilink 1000, it was crap, gave out after a few months. I recommend going on ebay and buying an intel 6250. If you can switch out ram you can install this chip. Don't get a killer 1102. I'll link it.
    Genuine Intel®Centrino®Advanced?N+WiMAX 6250 622ANXHMW | eBay
It won't void warranty or anything else. It's located under the battery. Just have to disconnect two antennae cables and pop it out like ram.

Only 15 bucks. Make sure you don't get the RU version (will say it at the end of the model number) This one should work.

Killer is a really good brand, but you probably wont see a difference. 15 bucks vs 50 bucks. But I have heard a few people having issues with killer. The 6250 will do its job perfectly. It's all most users would ever need. No need to go over the top on a wireless card really.
