Same issue with the m11x probably. The screen is touching the keyboard/touchpad/etc.

It's just marks from the keyboard. Happens on the m11 too.

Yeah it's the keyboard/mouse touching the screen when closed. I resolved this by adding a thin piece of soft material between the screen and keyboard/mouse area when closed. I took the original pink sheet from my original Sony Vaio laptop packaging made of some sort of material (polythene?) and cut it to approximately the size of my laptop (as it was around 17in).

Oh wow, please tell me you're kidding? I'm returning my m11x R3 because of the keyboard touching the screen issue. I wipe off the grease but you can already see permanent scratches and I've only had this thing for three weeks. I was actually considering getting the m14x instead but if it has the same problem, forget it. Guess it'll be the Samsung 9 series.

That's interesting. Getting a super-ultra-portable instead of an 6.5lb alienware gaming machine :p

Having the screen down while running full performance seems like a good way to break something in your laptop.

This is just poor quality control from dell. This issue was on the m11x R1 until r3 and now m14x.

Clamshell refers to the method of opening, not a particular open or closed state.

In all fairness it occurs to macbooks as well. Also, even if tolerances were so tight that the screen does not come into contact with the keyboard on a brand new laptop, slop in the hinges will still develop over time as per normal wear and tear, which will cause the lid to be slightly inclined towards one side anyway.

I would try to open the lid with hands on both sides to reduce this wear and tear.

We could always a have a half inch thick rubber lining across the entire parameter of the screen which will certainly solve this issue however :p

I think the only way around it would be to do an indented screen like ASUS's

Don't most manufacturers put little rubber bumpers around the screen to keep this from happening. The HP I'm typing on now has them and I HAVE NEVER had any marks left behind by my keyboard. In fact, my M14x is the only computer I've ever owned that doesn't have these bumpers...what's the point of leaving them off? Aesthetics? If that is the case I'd rather have a laptop with bumpers and a pristine screen than one without and scratches all over my screen.....are you listening Dell???
