I own a m17x r3 and wanted something smaller but the m14x just didn't have the muscle i was looking for, especially no mxm card. It has great curb appeal but could be more. Some say that with it being so small it would be an oven if you had a high end card in it, then why is it that Eurocom has a 15in laptop that has 2920xm and gtx 580m all for under $2400. Some times i feel companies like dell / alienware build products that are not fully high end so they can further upgrade them in later revisions, but it always seems that their one step behind in performance but have great looks.

What m14x did you get? The base model? Do you own one?

Sorry to hear that the m14x isn't the machine for you.

Then again, I know you're comparing the 15.6" Eurocom to the 14.0" m14x, but that 1.6" is more pronounced in gaming computers.

I mean, I would be interested to see an actual 14.0" laptop (not a 15.6") that packs the same hardware as the m14x. I mean, as you read here the m14x already runs hot, could you imagine a gtx5XX in there? lol

And besides, the 14.0" display is pumping out only a max 900p 1600x900, not a 1920x1080 resolution, so it doesn't need a GTX580 per se, to max out that resolution when gaming.

Well it wouldn't be fiscally responsible for dell/alienware to have most of their laptops with the same high end graphics card, that would hurt sales for their larger laptops. For the price, the m14x maybe should deserve a better graphics card, but there's nothing wrong with the gt555m. It's not a great card, but it's good. The m14x was built as a niche laptop, to fill the gap that high end gaming laptops cant, which is to be able to have a portable platform with not so much compromise on the components. I agree that the m14x isn't meant for everyone, it's not super portable, and its not a super gaming machine, but it takes those two idea's and combines them, a compromise between size and power. The m14x is great value when you take your focus off of the graphics card limitations. Not much computers under 15 inches has an intel 2630qm, 900p display, advanced lighting, and can hold its own in the gaming world, in fact, i can't think of any 14 inch laptops that has a quad core i7, let alone a gaming capability.
