    Hey guys

This just started happening this morning. I opened a game this morning (SWTOR) that i was running flawlessly on 80-100fps yesterday to find that i am now getting 20-40fps...

I changed no settings, and the game was not updated. Only change i noted was that alienautopsy seemed to update itself overnight.

Im using GPU with nvidia, It is not a steam game, I haven't updated the driver.. Help?

    Additional Details:
    - Tried uninstalling alienautopsy (after running it in which it said there were no errors), restarted and ran CCleaner... did not help
    - Clean install of nvidia drivers... did not help
    - Virus scan - found nothing...

My monitoring software says the GPU is definitely in use (99%) when i'm playing (though im not sure its running as fast as it usually does based on the noise)... I'm so confused..

This problem sounds similar to another thread but mine is more a complete drop in performance rather than lag spikes i think.

Any suggestions? 1st day of holidays and i get this :(

Ran SWTOR again (~8hrs since last attempt) and its working almost perfectly again at 100fps with occasional drops to 50-60... still a marked improvement over the 20fps i was getting.

I changed nothing. The game did not patch. Running at same temps. As suddenly as it came, the problem effectively disappeared. The faque?

Maybe it is throttling, check the temps or monitor the temps using msi afterburner and see if it reaches a certain temperature and if it drops the fps.

Run Fraps and afterburner together while gaming

From what i'm seeing, it seems that the gpu usage is not being fully used to its max potential maybe due to throttling. Perhaps you can try dling and running hwinfo32 also to track the cpu temps since when the gpu gets hot, the cpu temps goes up and it could possibly throttling.

Man, I also have the same problem. My m14x now can only run Warcraft III on 20fps (capped). Don't what to do with throttling issues.

I thought this so monitored temps when i had this problem. Gpu was <50C and cpu was <60C. Also i dont think it is temps because:
    1. It occurred as soon as i launched a game when the laptop had only just been switched on and therefore it wasn't hot enough to throttle
    2. I play this game usually for 3+ hours with no throttling. Then one day boom 20-30fps as soon as i launch...

As i said mine seemed to have fixed itself which is awesome but at the same time very irritating as i don't know the cause nor what to do if the problem reoccurs...

OK let's try something different, let's assume you are runningt the games using the nvidia graphics instead of the intel hd or let's assume you are forcing the nvidia geforce to run the application/games so it guarantees it.

Try this, right click your desktop or the icon on nvidia control panel, go to manage 3d settings, and under global settings, scroll down to power management mode and put it on prefer maximum performance instead of adaptive. You can also do this individually with any apps/games on the program settings tab.

Have you set the game to run at high performance in the Nvidia Control Panel? Also, if you let your m14x idle for hours, it will automatically turn off your discrete gpu and reboot is needed to turn it on again. Don't play while unplugged.

Hey laz91, ive had similar problems with these unplayable drops on my m14x. Only solution ive found is to restart the laptop. otherwise it will seem to cap itself around 10% cpu usage (dont know if thats the problem or just a symptom).

Desperately still trying to find a solution :[

And as you've found, changing settings in the NV console or power options does nothing to help (but they are good suggestions none the less).

Still have no idea how it fixed itself im afraid. Maybe try the new GPU beta drivers with a clean install? Though if its a CPU issue im not sure it will help...

Having this problem too. getting 30-40fps in bf3, drops to 5-15 and downclocks the gpu to 200 mhz at 65 degrees. we need to get this problem NOTICED so that dell does something about it. It's unacceptable.

It's the BIOS throttling the GPU just like with the 580M in the M17x R3. There's no danger, but you might have to use something like Nvidia Inspector and manually move the P1 and P2 states to the P0 state clocks. Essentially it goes into it's power saving modes when it hits that temp. I heard that's the easiest way to do it and fix the issue. :)

When i had this issue it would occur as soon as i launched the game - temps was 45C so i don't think it was the same issue as mine

I think this issue has started happening to me again. I noticed that the gpu appears to be locked at 835.3MHz which I don't think it usually is. Thoughts?

Happening again - gpu capping at 233 mHz at 49 degrees Celsius as soon as i launch the game. High performance power plan, ac is plugged in, was working perfectly last night and I have changed nothing since and game has not been updated since. Absolutely baffling.

EDIT: Got it working again by shutting down, leaving it off for literally 1 minute, unplugging and re-plugging the ac adapter into the laptop then turning back on. And before people comment; yes the ac was definitely plugged in correctly and the laptop was not too hot (i.e. was not throttling) when I was having issues.

My only theory is that it had problems because I turned on the laptop with the ac connected to the back of it but not plugged into the wall. I noticed 5 seconds after I had turned the laptop on and then went and plugged the ac into the wall. For some reason this seemed to cause the issue? It's all I can think of anyway - hopefully it helps people out in the future

Strange, a few days ago I had the same problem. I was in high performance, with low temps and ac plugged in. everything was running bad, capped at 20 fps.

Turns out the problem was the same... Power brick was plugged into the computer, but not to the wall...

I booted it up with this configuration, mid boot I plugged power brick to the wall, everything seemed fine, until I launched the game. I've decided to plug power cord out and back in and it worked. so yeah...

I noticed that my m14x R2 sometimes doesn't seem to "play nice" with the AC adapter. On at least two occasions, I've gotten a "power adapter not recognized" message on boot-up. Frame rates and game load times drop significantly - I'll check the power profile and settings and they will be normal. This seems to happen the most when I'm on the NVidia card and unplug the computer to take it into another room and plug it back in. Turning the laptop off, replugging it in, and turning it back on always fixes it.

Not sure if the cause is defective hardware or not completely compatible hardware. If someone knows a fix, I'd be happy to learn about it while my computer is under warranty. <3
