hi, first time joining and posting to the forums.
im looking for a replacement laptop, for a mix of things, surfing, gaming, kids work.
im a bit nervous though as some reports with this heat issue and fan noise? is it bad or just while gaming?
im stuck whether to go with this or the samsung rf712 which im waiting for a review on

Check around in the m14x section. Many of these topics have been covered.

Haven't had my system long enough to report in detail but the fan noise appears to be similar to the m15x. When system is not stressed fan noise is unnoticeable.

Right side of palm rest gets warm but no odd temperatures to report with normal use.

I purchased the m14x, and I have used it for a month now. I can say that it IS portable. The graphics card (GT 555m) is suitable for moderate gaming (cant max out newer games with good results). I dont have any high level fan noise when idle or web surfing. But the fan does kick on when gaming, but its not loud for me. As for heat...DO NOT play games with it on your lap. It does get hot, to the point where it hurts if you touch the bottom for more than a second. Either game on a desk, or a cooling pad. I use a pillow :) (try not to block the vents). But it stays lightly warm if you're not gaming. I recommend it. Keyboard is comfortable and by far one of the best feeling. If you do purchase, i suggest you get the 1600 x 900 reso screen. 1366x768 is just too low for a 14 inch screen, especially for this high end laptop. Bluetooth is a nice cheap option, and at least 6 gigs ram, 8 is better, either add it to your order or newegg it to save 100 bucks. And do yourself a favor and get the core i7 model.

Omg a pillow, probably the most stupid thing I heard since I'm on the NBR forums.

Seriously lol way to just trap every ounce of heat into that pillow and block every damn vent on the thing.

Don't put any laptop except MacBooks on surfaces where the bottom will have no airflow. If there's a vent on a laptop, don't block it

lol its a hard pillow thats smaller than the m14x, fans doesn't spin as fast as it could and temps below 65c, no vents blocked, works good for me. comfy when gaming in bed too

Some of you are so ignorant. I game on a pillow all the damn time. But I arc the end of whatever laptop I'm using up to not block the vents.

    "hahahahaha pillow"

I've been "bed gaming" with pillows for years across at least 6 different laptops. Never had a problem to date. Live a little and learn to think outside the box. Much more fun out here.

I promise you I game in a much more comfortable position than you ever will ;).

For some laptops the surfaces don't matter based on the vents. The M14x is one you do not want on anything that will muffle the vents. Any hard flat surface will be fine though.

The M14x so far is just the right size to be portable without any problem. Gaming so far, I do not use AA for anything since generally it makes me feel games are washed out, but without AA I have been able to max out Left 4 Dead 2, Mass Effect 1 and 2, Duke Nukem Forever, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 without problem. I can run StarCraft 2 on ultra with a good solid frame rate. These are older games now but still relevant. Most games that are favorable to nVidia hardware over ATI hardware will run beautifully on it. My feelings toward the m14x is that for the price its an amazing little laptop that gives massive power for the size.

The soft-touch finish is starting to become a deal-breaker with me...it scratches a bit too easily for my taste, I have to hover my wrist over the pad when I have my watch on. A friend didn't know about it, and used it one day, when I got back on it, it was scratched to hell >.>
