Nope, because the 2820QM you have is a (Sandy Bridge) 32nm CPU architecture while the i7 940XM is a (Clarksfield) 45nm CPU architecture, however there are still hope, you can bought the i7 2920XM or the i7 2960XM instead, plus the Sandy Bridge version of the i7 will provide you better clock speed thus making it run faster. But as for the M14x.

Sorry, but its not a sandy bridge processor, so it won't be compatible. If you're looking for an extreme overclockable processor, id suggest you don't swap out your 2820qm, the m14x can barely handle the heat from stock processors.

Your 2820qm should be a great processor for most applications, unless you care about benchmarking.

I have been running the i7-2960XM on my m14x since purchasing.

I have never had problems with overheating on the computer - you won't have any unexpected shutdowns and the like.

However if you are stressing all 8 cores the CPU does under-clock itself for thermal protection for some brief periods before increasing the clock speed again to regular levels.

I honestly don't know if the average of all this under-clocking in regular use is worse than using a slower CPU, I have seen Turbo Boost go up all the way to 3.6GHz so it may not be the case when you're not maxing out all threads (most games won't max out all threads).

My hunch is that it may still be a better idea to go with the i7-2920XM instead - this may not under-clock itself at all. Then again, it still might.

Part of the fun I get from installing out-of-spec parts on my system is to experiment, and I have had some bad system failures like CPUs under-clocking themselves all the time after regular extended use - I can assure you that hasn't happened on my system at least.

Then again your mileage may vary - as in better or worse.
