hey everyone, first time posting here, and ive been reading a lot about the m14x here and im very happy with what ive been able to do and get out of these forums, so heres what i have to ask you guys, im looking into getting an external SSD for my m14x and the one I plan on getting is the Iomega 256 GB SuperSpeed USB 3.0/USB2.0 External SSD Flash Drive 35143 (Black) from amazon, the reason being im running out of space on my current internal SSD and i will be using the external to play games off of it. do you recommend getting that or just getting a 2nd HDD in the m14x

don't put a second HDD in the M14x, its more of a hassle that its worth. Plus the Optical drive connection is limited to SATA 1 speeds, thats going to be slower than your external SSD. Just stick to the external, trust me.

If you bought an SSD stock from dell (Meaning they sent it to you with it installed) Is their a brand name on it? Is it to much to ask for you to open up the laptop quickly. (Unscrew a couple screws holding the optical drive in and then lift it up a little just so you can see the hard drive. And then see if there is a brand name?

It all depends on your personal preference. I dont like carrying around extra stuff, especially because I'm on the road all the time. I have no use for a CD drive, so what I did when I first bought my laptop 2 months ago was buy a Solid State during BlackFriday. Picked up a OCZ 128gb for 65 bucks after rebate. I replaced the primary hard drive with the SSD and then took the original primary (500GB) and used it as a secondary internal drive. It made more sense to do it this way.

owatch15, I don't know what you're talking about, but it took me 15 minutes to put together the external and replace the optical disk. There's only one screw that holds the bottom panel on and after that another 8 screws, 4 on the caddy, and another 4 that holds the bay. put the hard drive in the HDD caddy, reverse order, then you're done. No fabrication needed. :]

would it void the warranty if i replace the CD drive? i really dont mind carrying the external, but i dont want the second HDD to be slow like many people are saying, so i think i might just go with the external SSD, i would like some more feedback before i do decide though

It shouldn't void the warranty. I've installed an internal hdd on every dell I've had (600m, d630, 6400, 6410, and now the m14x). They've never given me a problem with it. Anywho, I think alot of it is overrated. I have BF3, SC2, COD running off the external and I have not experienced any bit of lag.

Besides, you're not replacing the CD drive. You're merely putting it away in storage for safe keeping :D

heyitsvu Not sure if your simply blind or just ignorant. There are clearly 2 screws holding the bottom panel on. Not one. And maybe your right! No fabrication needed! After all, the only hassle is removing screws. The ribbon going to the Optical drive isn't important. Just rip it out! So nice to see a well informed person post a appreciative reply to my post on the forum. Next time just shut up.

I'm not sure if you missed the memo, but like I said, it's just an opinion. It was a simple mistake on my part that I wrote one screw. My e6410 had only one screw, so I was mistaken.

I'm talking from my own experiences here. I've done the mod, and it's not as much of a hassle as you say it to be. You think screws are a hassle? Try stripping down the motherboard to change out the thermal paste.

Here's the link on how to do the secondary hard drive for this notebook.

owatch15, if you think installing a second hard drive is a hassle, then damn , I must be living my life the hard way lol.

I thought I made it clear that the hassle wasn't just removing screws. It was actually the main point of my comment, hence the "...only hassle is removing screws. The ribbon going to the Optical drive isn't important.". Its not hard to see I'm being sarcastic about that. I'm obviously telling you that you can't just tell someone its as simple as removing a couple of screws when there is a fragile ribbon going from your optical drive to the motherboard and which needs to be removed to use with the second HDD. I'm sorry you didn't get that at all. Since your reply has simply some stuff about me thinking screws were a hassle again..

That ribbon isn't as fragile as you think. I've done this on 3 different m14x's. It's merely just a stick strip on the underside of the ribbon you have to remove. just slowly peel backwards and the tape comes up.

I apologize if I didn't get your sarcasm. Just giving my opinion and then being called ignorant isn't exactly a warm welcome for a first time poster when all I'm trying to do is give some friendly advice.

So was I, and being greeted by someone telling me I was fabricating or exaggerating the process of swapping a hard drive when I too, was only trying to help, isn't much fun either. Next time please consider that other people also have opinions that should be respected. Maybe I got a little too angry, but It really did tick me off. Cheers...

As for Marvrik. Remember your second HDD is limited to SATA 1 type connection, so its going to perform pretty slow compared to your other hard drives.

I think you need to reread it again man. I never said anything like that. All I said was it doesn't take as long as you think it does. You really blew everything out of proportion. You're totally putting words into my mouth, which is why you took everything the wrong way.

Whatever it is, it's all a misunderstanding. I guess we can call it even lol.
