    Hey gang,
After reading that I could upgrade my m14x r1 to 16gb of ram I bought:
    Crucial 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3L 1600 (PC3L 12800) Laptop Memory Model CT2KIT102464BF160B

Unfortunately, after I installed the new memory windows failed to boot, went to blue screen and the comp powered off. I put back the old Hynix 2x2 GB DDR3-1600 DDR3 SDRAM and it started up just fine.
The comp is a i7-2630QM, I'm using windows 7 and I've never upgraded the bios, it's still A01.

I know I may never need 16gb but when I heard that the m14xr1 could handle it, I thought what the hell.
Anyone have an idea what I can do to get the new memory to work?

    Thanks!

Try updating the BIOS to the latest version using the Hynix RAM. Then install them again.

Great catch, it does seem like the specs don't match the machine's hardware requirements.

    Thanks y'all.
    Last question:
    Can I use ddr3 1.35v in my m14xr1?
Or do I need to stick with ddr3 1.5v?

The M18xR2 works with DDR3L 1.35V memory. I have also used it in the M18xR1 (Sandy Bridge, like the machine in question.) That's what I am using in the M18xR2 right now... 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3L-2133 1.35V and it is flawless. DDR3L should be backward compatible with most DDR3 systems.

It may be the 8GB stick size causing the issue. Try booting with one stick installed. If it fails, remove that one and try the other 8GB stick. Maybe one of them is defective.

Didn't know the M18x r2 uses also the DDR3L. I have some laying around. Gonna give it a try. Will report back.

as Mr fox has already said - the DDR3L can usually run at both 1.35v and 1.5v it really doesn't matter and I can see no reason why DDR3L wouldn't work in the R1. The crucial ram in particular is specifically designed to run fine with both voltages.

I tried Mr. Fox's idea and installed both sticks together and separately.
It looks like one of the sticks was defective because right now I'm running on one 8gb DDR3L stick.
It's still twice as much ram as I had before, so that's great but, I'm bummed one of my sticks was a clunker.
Maybe I'll get around to buying another someday to experiment with 16gb again.
The M14xR1 definitely can run on 1.35v DDR3L though so I guess that's good to know.
    Thanks for your help everybody.
