I see three different connections offered on the M14x that can be used to output to a larger monitor. I've always had issues with connecting laptops to a large screen LCD and always end up with some screen tearing and a few rows of ripples on the screen. Is there anything to combat this?

For screen tearing in game, make sure you enable syncing every frame, that should fix it. And for outputs, VGA is only really for projectors, I don't really use the Mini Display port, no monitor I have supports it, HDMI is more convenient and popular.

Ditto as above. HDMI all the way.

I use the mini-displayport slot. I have a mini-displayport to displayport cable that goes to my Dell 30" monitor. HDMI only supports a max resolution of 1920x1080 and the 30" is 2560x1600.

    Works perfectly.

That's odd because I'm currently running 1920x1200 with an Insignia brand HDMI cable and no problems. Audio works as well. :)

DVI supports up to 1920x1200 on a single link and you would need a dual link cable for anything above. the current HDMI spec which is version 1.4 supports up to 3840×2160. Not too sure about display port as I only just started using it myself for eyefinity on my desktop.
