Just got my new laptop, looks absolutely amazing but can't really do anything until I get an Antivirus on and get steam up. Norton's 360 V5 is half price atm, was going to get that but I thought I'd get a consensus here first as you guys were so good at helping me choose the specs.
So what do you use what are its pro/cons? What to aviod from past expieriences?
    Thanks in Advance,
    Steven

Er Didnt your thread just move to Here

anyway as for me I use Kaspersky Interent Security 2011 but it is a paid AV, IMO the best paid AV, ESET NOD32 comes next, but if for free, Microsoft Security Essential is the best.

    KIS 2011
Pros: In-Depth scan as default, have a "Shut Down, Sleep, Hibernation" option after scan, somewhat aggressive, build-in Firewall (Most Internet Security version has this)
Cons: Slow scanning, quite expansive, use quite a lot of system resource (when it is scanning only)

    ESET NOD32
Pros: Doesnt take much hard drive spaces, fast but accurate scanning, use really litte system resource even with scanning.
Cons: no "Sleep, Hibernation. Shut Down" option after scan, No built-in Firewall,

I use Kaspersky 2011 for almost all of my PCs. If I need free software it's MSE hands down. Both haven't really let me down.

I don't have a problem with paying, would like to stick to relitively easy to use software though

I went with Norton 360 V5. It came with 3 licenses so can sell one and put the other on my older, now only for downloading, laptop. One more question, there is only one fan on the bottom of the laptop, there's two grill areas but only one is an actual fan right?

 You come on here, ask for advice, and then you went with a company that has one of the WORST reputations for the quality of their software? Why even bother asking then? Kaspersky will also come with 3 licenses, and is by far the BEST AV software you can buy. The "cons" that were listed above are not really cons at all (outside of the price, but IMO you are getting what you pay for, great software, great customer service, and peace of mind) it just means that the software is extremely thorough. Which it is. It also updates daily, so you never truly have to worry about a new threat, because as soon as one shows up on the grid, they update their database, and then your software updates automatically, daily. I can't even tell when it's downloading the updates, because it barely interferes with performance.

Microsoft Security Essentials is perfectly fine. Between that, Malwarebytes and common sense, there's no need to pay for anti-virus.

Honestly, common sense about what you download and what sites you visit are the most beneficial things you can do.

I accidently started two threads at once due to the adverse effects of alchohol and in the other thread linked further up the page Norton was well regarded and stated by more than one member as the best paid option. Also I don't know whos opinion you arre refering to as all reviews for the 2010 - 2011 products were revered as being the best over all product. Admittedly the earlier products weren't recieved well but that doesn't matter to their current products does it?

The only problems I've had in the past is downloading torrented games which malwarebytes took care of it. TBH if you spend over £1000 on a laptop not spending £30 on an antivirus which I can put on my old laptop now as well now is kind of a waste. Anyway the fan question? It is only on one side right?

I've used free AV programs for years and since i'm heavy downloader and the programs i've used always alert me when something suspicious was DL'ed.

    What i use: MSE, MB-AM, Spy-bot S&D

Why i use them: Good reputation, effective as paid ones, extreamly light on resourses ( my hdd is slow so it's important).

I wouldn't even put norton in my system if i get paid one for free.

Because last time i put it in my system out of curiosity. It ran out of trial and stopped protecting my system even tho i was infected and it refused to clean it until i pay for the product, uninstalling it is another pain.

You don't even need all those programs. I have MSE only with Windows Firewall on and UAC turned off. The main defence is your common sense.

Agreed. All you need is Microsoft Security Essentials+Firewall. Easy, simple, with little strain on system.

I'll third that one. MSE on my m14x. You cant beat a bit of common sense.

My main rig has had AVG and comodo firewall on for the last two years and have found that a good if slightly more resource hungry combination.

I've not paid for Antivirus or Firewall in Ten years. The biggest threat is stupidity :)

Not opening attachments or following links / downloading and opening .exe files from non trusted sources.
